“I can,” I said, wanting to help.

That was a mistake. As soon as the words left my mouth, she swiveled on her heel to face me, her eyes burning with anger. Previously, that anger had nowhere to go and was boiling up inside of her. I had just given her a target: me.

“I don’t want you to handle all of my problems, Damien. You have more than enough on your plate. This is supposed to be my responsibility. I’m Luna, and I want to act like it.”

“You can’t do anything trapped here,” I said. “Let me handle it.” I still wanted to fix it, to make things easier for

her.

But that wasn’t what she wanted at all.

“I am trapped here,” she said. “If you’d let me go there, to meet with them, I could get this all straightened out.”

“Absolutely not,” I said firmly. “There are dangers out there -”

“I’m suffocating here,” I told him. “You haven’t found Claire or Sienna yet. What if you never do? Am I to be a prisoner for the rest of my life, just because there might be danger outside of my door?”

“I will find them,” I said, my own annoyance rising now at her lack of faith in me. “I just need you to be patient

“That’s all I ever am,” she said. “We could compromise. I could take guards with me. Surround me in bodyguards and body armor and whatever else, I don’t care. I’ll do it. But I have to go take care of this myself, Damien. Please.”

“I’m sorry, Amelia.”

Gods, I wanted to fix things, but I just couldn’t let her do this. There were too many dangers out there. She had to stay here. She had to trust me, until I could solve everything myself.

Then I could fix things. We were strong together. We could survive this.

Yet she looked at me like I was breaking her heart. “I feel like a prisoner,” she said, and as I looked at her, I felt an echo of all those years ago, before I had lost her the first time.

Even so, I couldn’t change my mind on this. It was for her own good.

If I lost her again…

I wouldn’t survive it this time.

“I’m Luna. I have responsibilities, and I can’t let fear ruin what I’m trying to accomplish.”

“I’m sorry,” I said again, and I meant it.

She must have seen that in my face, but she looked so defeated, it made my heart ache. “I’m sorry too.”

“You will stay here,” I said. “But I have to leave, to return to my hunt. When I come back, we can talk about this

more.’

She turned away from me. “Would it make a difference?”

I didn’t have an answer. “I love you,” I said.

“Just go,” she replied.

I couldn’t make her say it back, so I gathered up the pieces of my heart, turned and walked out the door, to get back to my hunt.

Amelia’s POV

I waited for him to leave, my mind already made up.

I wasn’t going to stay here. I wasn’t leaving forever, I just needed to go to the meeting in person and handle things. Then I’d come right back.

What could happen in such a short amount of time?

But with me being watched by the guard, I had to be somewhat sneaky about this.
