Damien’s POV

“If you were really sorry, you would have come home sooner.” Stacy said the words to the floor, her eyes downcast, her mouth twisted down into a frown.

I could have argued with her. I could have told her that in leaving, I was trying to help keep them safe. But those facts wouldn’t change her feelings.

I wasn’t here, and my family needed me to be. Even when Amelia had tried to reach out herself, I’d ignored her. I’d made my reasons, knowing I was homesick and that hearing her voice would make me crack.

While I’d been priding myself on being a good Alpha and a good protector, doing everything I could to keep my family safe, I had inadvertently been hurting them myself.

Stacy’s reaction was just a part of this, a consequence of my own actions. Now, it wasn’t my place to argue whether or not her feelings were valid. Of course they were. It was my duty as her father to assure her that no matter, I loved her and even if I made mistakes, I would work hard to make up for them.

“I am sorry,” I said. “And I love you. I stayed away, focusing on trying to stop the dangers outside that I didn’t realize I’ve been hurting you. But I’m aware now. And I promise you both, that though I will have to leave again, to continue this search, I will never stay away this long without calling, at the very least, and coming home more often.”

Amy looked at me. “You love us?”

“I love you both,” I said.

“And Mommy?” Amy asked.

“Mommy, too.”

“Then don’t make her sad anymore,” Amy said. “She cried.”

“She cried a lot,” Stacy said, clearly still upset with me.

“I will fix it,” I said. “We are a family. We have rough patches, but we stick together. Even Mommies and Daddies make mistakes sometimes. But we admit when we are wrong and we try to fix things. That’s what makes families special.”

“Okay…” Amy said.

Stacy continued to frown. “Fix it first, then I’ll forgive you.”

I could work with that, but in the meantime… “Can I have a hug?”

Amy gave me a hug right away. Stacy was a bit more hesitant, but it was clear after a moment that she had missed me as much as I missed her and she couldn’t resist.

Hugging the girls fixed a gaping hole that I hadn’t realized had been opening up inside of me until now that it was full again.

Now, I just had to fix things with Amelia.

Last night had been a pretty good head start, but I couldn’t just rely on my body to heal the hurts I had caused. I also needed to use my words.

After breaking with my girls, sending them on their way as they told me their tutor would be there soon, I headed into the bathroom to take a hot shower and change. It felt good to relax under the steaming water. For the past few days, I did nothing but jump under cold water in the gym before heading out again.
