His face scrunched like he tasted something sour, but he didn’t talk back this time. Either he got wiser in the past thirty seconds, or he knew not to mess with me like he could Sienna.

If he didn’t have any actual suggestions, this was just how things were going to be.

“I have contacts still in Damien’s pack,” I said. “High ranking members. They can help us across the border.”

Finally, everyone seemed to be in agreement.

It was finally time for action.

Jake’s POV

I haven’t slept in a full week when I finally arrived home again to rest. Because my exhaustion had seeped down into my very bones, making them ache, I likely wasn’t the most patient person in the world at the moment. So when Mom stopped me in the hallway on the way to my bedroom, I was feeling grumpy at best, annoyed and short at worst.

“Jake, I’ve been searching everywhere,” Mom said. “But I can’t find any trace of our servant Ruth.”

“Did you try the hospitals?” I asked. While I was sympathetic to the potential health crisis of one of our family’s oldest servants, I didn’t really have the time or energy to dedicate to this right now.

Claire and Sienna were still out there. They were dangerous and likely planning something. Finding and stopping them had to take precedence over everything else.

“I did. Nothing,” Mom said.

“Forgive me, but did you check the morgue?” I knew I was being crass, but I didn’t care with how tired I was. If Ruth wasn’t in the hospital, it was possible she had just keeled over and died.

Mom’s face fell for a moment. “Yes, I called them too. They didn’t have anyone fitting her description.”

“I don’t know, Mom. Maybe she just went on an overdue vacation,” I said.

“Without telling us?”

“She could have just quit.”

“Without notice?”

I didn’t know what she wanted me to say, and I was tired of trying to figure it out. “I’m sorry, Mom, really. But I have more important things to worry about.”

I stepped around her, ready to just collapse into my bed.

Mom followed behind me. “Her disappearance lines up with Sienna and Claire’s breakout, Jake. What if… I don’t know. What if they did something to her?”

I paused, stopping in my stride. Mom came to my side, her pleading eyes looking into my face.
