Chapter 436

Damien’s POV

Amelia had stopped struggling by the time we finally reached the house, though until then, she had been kicking and squirming, while telling me that this whole macho act of mine was unnecessary and I was being ridiculous.

I begged to differ, seeing as how, the minute I turned my back to her, trusting her to stay put, she had sneaked out of the house against my direct command.

I was having flashbacks of our past, and while I didn’t want to make the same mistakes, I found that my fear and rage prevented me from doing anything other than trying to protect her the best way I knew how. That meant, she had to stay inside of this house whether she liked it or not.

She did not like it.

As soon as we were inside of the house, and I placed her down on her feet, she stormed away from me, moving into the living room without looking back. Yet, without even seeing her face, I knew she was furious. She had been a ball of tension for the past fifteen minutes.

Now, I could see that tension displayed in the tight straightness of her shoulders and the way her hands were curled into fists at her sides.

“Amelia,” I said, bracing for an argument. Maybe I wanted one myself. After her defiance, I was just as tense, just as fired up.

She could have been killed, leaving the house like that, and she was acting as if she didn’t care at all.

“Just leave, Damien.” Her voice held more ice than I’d heard with her in a long time, perhaps ever. But I wasn’t going to be frozen out, not now, when I was so full of boiling hot anger.

“I’ll leave,” I said, “When I’m good and satisfied that you have any idea the amount of needless worry you put me through, and the danger you put yourself in. And for what? For nothing.”

“I had plenty of reason,” she replied. “The pack wives were disrespecting me. They were using the excuse that I’ve been trapped here to attempt to override my authority.” She turned back to face me, determination in her eyes. “Damien, I need to be able to do things if you expect me to be your Luna. I can’t just hide.”

“You have to hide,” I said. “Your life is in danger.”

“I suspect, as Luna, that my life will always be in danger in some way.”

“That’s different,” I snapped. “We can’t be afraid of the unknown. But these dangers are known, and they have names. Claire and Sienna.”

“I’m not afraid of them.”

“You should be!” I roared.

Her eyes went wide, as if surprised by my outburst. I was surprised too. I hadn’t meant to shout. I took a moment, turning my back to Amelia in an effort to calm down.

“I’m not trying to be a villain,” I said, once I had felt like I could speak again without shouting. “I just need to keep you safe, and I don’t know what else to do. You’ll have a guard sit with you throughout the day, to make sure nothing happens, and ”

“Part of love is trust,” Amella sald.

“And how am I supposed to trust you, after you sneaked out of here?” I said bitterly, “You went behind my back, Amelia.”

“You didn’t give me any choice, Damien. I’m being kept a prisoner here, and I-

A small gasp cut through her words. We both looked to the entryway nearest the stairs and saw Amy and Stacy’s heads poking out from around the corner. When they were spotted, they ducked behind it.

I looked back at Amelia, who immediately looked at me in turn. We shared a look of guilt, and I knew even if we were in disagreement about everything else, we could be in agreement about our children.

Neither of us had meant to hurt them, but our argument overheard had done just that.

Without saying a word, we seemed to mutually agree that we needed to push our own issues to the side to attend to the girls.

Amelia went first, walking to the stairs, and I was quick behind her.

As we turned the corner, we saw both girls there. Amy was crying and Stacy was nearing that point, even if her tears hadn’t dropped from her eyes yet.

The sight of their tears cracked something inside of me. I never wanted my little girls to be upset. I only ever wanted them to be safe and happy.

“What’s wrong?” Amelia asked.

Amy couldn’t answer. Stacy blinked and her tears fell.

“Are you… breaking up?”

“No,” Amelia said at once, which came as something of a relief to me.

“No,” I agreed. “We were just having a discussion.”

“It was loud,” Amy said, her voice muffled from where she was speaking into her hands.

“That was wrong of us,” Amelia said. “But we didn’t mean it. Sometimes Mommies and Daddies disagree about things, but that doesn’t mean that they are breaking up.”

“I don’t want us to not be a family anymore,” Stacy said, and sobbed.

I stepped closer, but Amelia moved faster, leaning down to the girls, she pulled them both into her arms.

“We are always going to be a family, no matter what,” Amelia said.

“Your mom is right,” I added. “No matter what.”

Looking at them, my family, I began to recognize some of the own worry that had bubbled within me. Despite

some of Amelia’s reassurances now, I had seen that look in her eyes before. Maybe the kids were keeping here for now, but I didn’t know how long it would be before she decided to run again.

Yet, just like in the past, I could see that it was my actions that were pressing her into this. I wished there was a way I could help make her understand that I only wanted the best for her. That I was being so protective because if I lost her, it would completely destroy me.

It almost had once. I went into a dark place that only the girls could bring me out of. It had been too much responsibility for them then, just as it was now.
