Chapter 438
“You think bodyguards you appoint can be bought?” Amelia asked.
“Unfortunately, I can’t trust anyone, even those I want to believe I can trust. My Beta Ethan…” I had to stop, to inhale and center myself. Ethan’s betrayal cut deeply, as did that of Victoria. “Even my own sister…”
Amelia looked at me like she was seeing me for the first time. “So that’s what happened. I was wondering where they went…”
“You never asked,” I said.
“I was afraid to.”
We fell silent again. Amelia sipped at her chardonnay, but I set my whiskey to the side now. Turning toward her on the couch, I took her hand in mine.
“Please understand, Amelia. I don’t keep you confided because I want you to be trapped. It is just vital to my own well-being that you be kept safe.”
She turned her hand in mine, lacing our fingers together. For the first time tonight, I felt like our connection was going to remain intact after all. I nearly sighed in relief.
“If we can’t trust anyone but each other, then maybe you can be my bodyguard,” Amelia said.
I froze.
“If you are the only one you trust to keep me safe, then can’t you accompany me when I need to leave the house?” Amelia asked. “I know you are busy, and I won’t ask it often. But there are times when it is necessary. You do trust yourself to keep me safe?”
“I do,” I said.
“Then, can you agree to this?”
A hope shone brightly in her eyes.
As Alpha, I was busy, and with the hunt for Claire and Sienna at the forefront of my duties, I wasn’t sure I would ever have time to accompany her.
But I could see this was the compromise we would both need to make. She was being accommodating to me in suggesting this. Didn’t I need to extend to her the same curtesy?
I remained hesitant. It would be so much safer for her to just stay within the walls of this house.
But, if I didn’t agree, I already knew what I would be risking.
Amelia herself. At least, her desire to stay by my side.
I’d chosen wrong in the past. I couldn’t do so again.
“I won’t be able to do this all the time,” I said. “The hunt is still a priority, as are my other Alpha duties.”
The hope started to dim in her eyes, so I spoke quicker now.

“But on occasion. Yes, I can do this.”
At once, it was as if a dam of relief had opened inside of her. She sighed and then laughed. The hope in her gaze brightened to a full on sparkle. All of it helped erase the fear inside of me, freeing me from the weight of this particular worry.
“Thank you, Damien,” she said.
Amelia would stay in my life. She wasn’t going to run.
I nodded, unable to find the words to describe how I felt in this moment.
She sipped again from her chardonnay, downing the rest of the glass before setting it aside.
