With some convincing, we coaxed the girls to return upstairs. Together, Amelia and I spent some time with them, playing games and reading books. During this, they stopped crying, and when it came time to put them to bed, they seemed reassured that everything was fine.
At least, for now.
Leaving their bedrooms, Amelia and I quietly returned downstairs to the den. While Amelia walked to the center of the room, I moved to the bar, looking for a drink.
“Wine?” I asked her.
She glanced around, gaze catching on the couch but she didn’t sit down. It was like she didn’t know what to do with herself.
I knew the feeling.
“Something white,” she said. “Please.”
I reached for the wine fridge under the bar and retrieved a bottle of chardonnay. After popping the cork, I poured her a glass, then replaced the cork in the bottle and placed it back in the fridge. For myself, I poured a short glass of smooth sipping whiskey.
Taking the glasses, I moved closer to her. After passing her the chardonnay, I gestured toward the couch. “Let’s sit,” I said.
“I don’t want to argue,” she replied. She was still tense, wrapping an arm around herself.
“Neither do I,” I told her. “I think maybe it’s time to compromise.”
“Compromise?” she repeated. Looking at me now, she lifted a brow.
Admittedly, compromise had been something of a dirty word to me lately, and it still sat in my gut with a heavy weight. Protecting Amelia and the girls was my number one priority and always would be. But, even I could see, especially remembering mistakes of the past, that pushing too much would only succeed in shoving her away from me.
I needed her close to me to properly protect her as I want.
That meant I had to listen, and I had to try.
Even if it went against my very nature, I loved her enough to attempt to be more flexible, at least in how my protection would look.
Nodding, I sat down on the couch.
With a curious look, she moved and sat down beside me.
We both took a drink.
When we finished, I spoke first. “Can we first agree to never argue like that again?”

“Yes,” Amelia said at once. “I hate that the girls heard us. Gods, they were so frightened. Never again.”
“Never again,” I agreed.
We took another sip from our glasses. Even for smooth whiskey, today it burned the whole way down.
“I understand you don’t want guards inside of the house and that you feel like a prisoner here,” I said. “But please try to see my side of things as well. I cannot have you unprotected.”
“The house is protected fine,” Amelia said. “I don’t need more guards. And if I needed to leave the house, maybe you could let me do so, but with bodyguards.”
