Chapter 448
He didn’t have a response to that, going very quiet all of the sudden.
If I could jump through the phone, I would have. He was being so infuriating. I wanted him to look me in my eyes and tell me my parents couldn’t visit, if that was the decision he was going to make.
“I’m texting the guards now,” Damien said. “Put me on speakerphone.”
I did so. “They can hear you.”
“I’ve sent you the authorization code,” Damien said. “Please allow Martin and Lillian entrance into the house. They are free to come and go as they please.”
“Yes, Alpha,” the guard said and finally stepped to the side.
“There,” Damien said. “Enjoy your visit, Amelia.”
Before I could respond, he disconnected the call.
Only a few days ago, I had thought we’d made the most wonderful forward progress in our relationship. Now, I felt like I was alone in this once more, with the love of my life distancing himself both mentally and physically.
I didn’t know how we would recover from this.
Or if either of us would even want to try.
The guards coordinated and stepped to the side, allowing Martin and Lillian to enter. Dad immediately came forward and hugged me.
“I’m so sorry for that,” I told him.
“I’m not angry at Damien for trying to keep you safe,” Martin said. “Even if his methods are… challenging.”
That was a very diplomatic way of putting it. If I had to pick a word, I would have said ‘draconian’ or ‘archaic’ or even ‘idiotic.’ I held my tongue now, though. My parents were here, so I could focus on them and let go of this anger I felt.
At least for now.
After ending my hug with Dad, I turned to Mom, expecting the same treatment. But she stayed a few feet away, barely inside the foyer.
“Is something wrong?” I asked. Her face was downcast, and her cheeks were splotchy with color, like she had been crying. My heart immediately ached for her, and I stepped closer to her. She winced and I stopped. “What’s going on?”
“I’m so sorry, Amelia,” Mom said and her tears started again.
Confusion crushed me. I didn’t know what to do, or how to even begin to understand what she was talking about. Why did she feel the need to apologize to me?
“Why don’t we sit down somewhere and we can talk about this?” Dad suggested.

That sounded like a good idea, so I lead them into the living room. Thankfully, the girls were still busy with their lessons in another room, so they didn’t see Mom cry. Hopefully, whatever was wrong, I could help clear up before they finished and came running to see their grandparents.
Parents and grandparents were supposed to be steady. Even as an adult, seeing my Mom upset left me feeling unbalanced and uncertain.
We sat down on the couch, with Mom on one side of me and Dad on the other. I felt like I was being prepared for bad news, especially as Dad gave me a sad, comforting smile.
“I don’t understand,” I told them. “Someone please explain to me what’s happening.”
“I will,” Mom said. “I’m going to. That’s partly why I wanted to come and see you. I had to tell you in person what we discovered. I don’t know if you will ever be able to forgive me…” She blinked and more tears fell.
Reaching out, I took her hand in mine. “You are my mother,” I said. “Whatever it is, I will understand. Or at least try to. We will work through it.”
