Sienna’s POV

It wasn’t that lan wanted to ruin this for us; it was more that he wasn’t paying attention. I knew acting like a servant was going to be difficult for him, but maybe I didn’t fully understand just how difficult.
Since he thought himself on an entirely different plane above all servants, it was as if he couldn’t even see that this head servant was threatening us. In his daily life, he would probably never see her as a threat.
Someone had to do something, or this whole thing would be over before it began. Claire’s eyes spoke of violence. Ruth wasn’t looking at lan at all.
That left it to me. I quickly spoke up, “Please forgive him, ma’am. He recently suffered a loss in his family and he’s had moments like these. It’s the grief…”
Grabbing lan’s arm, I tugged gently, so that he would know we were in trouble and that I was talking about him. He startled slightly, glancing at me and then at the head servant.
“Uh, yes… my, uh… apologizes,” he said.
The head servant tilted her head, but at the same moment, one of the other servants in the kitchen dropped a plate of food. Torn in several directions as she seemed to be, she must have decided to accept my explanation.
“Just smile with the guests, alright? Keep your personal business out of this,” she said, and then hurried off toward the kitchens.
The moment her back was turned, Claire kicked Ian in the shins.
He cursed. “The hells, Claire!”
“You nearly ruined it for us,” Claire snapped. “If Sienna hadn’t covered for you

“Enough, all of you,” Ruth said. “We are here now and this is happening. No more mistakes.”
Claire rubbed her forehead as she sighed. “You’re right. We need to blend in, get our covers straight. Then we can put our plans in action. Everyone find a role they can do competently enough and blend in.”
With that, we all went our separate ways. It was a relief to be away from them.
If only for a moment, I could convince myself that I was attending this banquet as a guest, not a servant. Of course, that feeling didn’t last long, given my attire and that I was among the servants, not the guests.
I saw a line of servers with trays accepting hors d’oeuvres from the chefs, before turning out and heading into the main ballroom.
Grabbing a tray from the pile, I joined this line and then approached the chef to receive some of the hors d’oeuvres. Once my tray was filled, I turned and followed the server in front of me out into the main ballroom.
Three steps in, I skidded to a stop. At the same time I was entering the banquet hall from the servants’ doors, Amelia and Damien, their kids, and my parents, were coming in from the main entrance.
As the kids ran around, my mom and dad were very near Amelia. Whatever they were saying made her smile. My mom even looped her arm through Amelia’s as they walked forward together, with Damien looming behind

them, a protective presence.
At once, my heart broke all over again. They looked so much like a family.
It should have been me.
I didn’t care about Damien or even the kids, but my parents should have been talking to me, complimenting me, escorting me like I belonged.
Instead, I felt like I was miles away, even if I was only across the ballroom. A fugitive hiding in servant’s clothes.
