Chapter 458

Damien’s POV

$25 Bonus

Quickly, I made sure the children were safe. I ordered some guards to protect them no matter the cost. Martin and Lillian were confused but there was no time to explain.

At once, I took off toward the servants back exit. Halfway there, Jake caught up to me.

“What’s going on?” he asked me, keeping pace with me.

“They’ve taken her,” I said.

Jake growled. I felt his sharp glare on the side of his face, and knew that he blamed me. We could deal with that later when Amelia was safe.

For now, we had to stay focused on finding Amelia and getting her back to us.

Then we could argue and fight. He could punch me for losing sight of Amelia, and I’d probably let him.

We ran outside then looked around.

“Where?” Jake demanded.

I focused again, still feeling like Amelia was being tugged further away from me.

I pointed down the street. “That way.”

At once, Jake and I both shifted into our wolf forms. Then, like the devil was on our tails, we took off running, Jake following a half-step behind me, allowing my sharp grip on the mating bond I shared with Amelia to lead the way.

Hold on, Amelia, I called with my heart. I had no idea if she could hear me, but I hoped she could. I still felt her fear ping sharply inside of me. I’m on my way. Just hold on.

Claire’s POV

Ruth was behind the wheel. With the pedal all the day down to the floor, she was driving the van as fast as it would go. I had no doubt she was leading us toward rogue territory.

In the bed of the van, Amelia was struggling, despite the hard grip Ian kept on her arms. Sienna was trying to wrap a rope around her to tie it, but Amelia squirmed like the worm she was, shaking off the rope as quickly as Sienna was trying to tie it.

Although, to be fair, Sienna wasn’t putting in as much effort as she should have been. She was clearly still upset with Ian, even snapping at him, “This is the worst plan.”

“What do you know?” Ian snapped back. “Your plan was by far the worst.”

“You only didn’t like it because then your precious Amelia would have been in bed with someone else.”

“She’s not my precious anything. She is the harlot who ruined my family’s reputation and my life,” Ian replied. What do you have to be upset about, anyway? Maybe you’d like to go and seduce every other man at the party.”

“I didn’t seduce them to sleep with them,” Sienna said. “It was for the plan!”

“Likely story,” lan replied.

“Will both of you stop it,” I said curtly, allowing my annoyance to shine through. “We are in the middle of a kidnapping and you to are biting at each other like an old married couple.”

“Mind your own business, Claire,” Ian said.

“I will when we are somewhere safe, and not one minute before,” I said.

Meanwhile, I noticed Amelia watching us all bicker with each other. I could practically see the gears in her head turning, thinking how she could use our disorganization against us. I knew that was what she was thinking because that was what I would have thought if I had been in her place.

Amelia wasn’t a fool, but even a fool would be looking for a way to escape this.

Watching her, I saw the moment something clicked in her mind.

Sienna and Ian were back to fighting one another. Amelia turned and reached for the door.

I pounced from the passenger seat. Closing the distance, I tackled Amelia from behind, pining her down to the bed of the truck.

“What the hell?” Ian asked.

“She was about to escape!” I said.

Ruth continued to barrel the van forward. We must have turned off the main road, because things were much bumpier now in the back of the van. We were all being jostled. This made it more difficult to hold onto Amelia.

In a show of strength that a wolfless shouldn’t have, Amelia turned and shoved me. Perhaps it aligned with a bounce, because I went flying across the back of the van, hitting one of the sides.

Amelia moved quickly, popping open the back of the van, and it flung open, showing the bumpy dirt road we had traveled down.

Ian reached out, snatching Amelia around the waist, holding her back from jumping out.

In the distance, a wolf howled.

I knew that howl, and I knew that wolf.

Damien was coming to retrieve his mate.

Everyone froze hearing the howl. Amelia’s eyes lit up, hope restored.

“Damien,” she said, first as a gasping breath, and then as a shout. “Damien! I’m here!”

“Shut up!” Ian said and threw her back, slamming her down on the ground again.

From the driver’s seat, Ruth brandished the knife she had stolen from the carving station at the kitchen. “Take this,” she said, passing the knife back to me. “Finish this farce already. Leave nothing for the Alphas but a body to find.”

I looked at the knife and then down at Amelia.

I wanted her dead, but… stabbing someone with a knife was so personal, so… tasteless. Poisoning was better. It was safer.

“You do it,” I said, holding the knife out for Sienna.

Shaking her head, she held up both arms. “No way.”

She was a coward anyway. Next I held the knife for lan. “You then.”

“You wanted to poison her,” Ian said. “How is this different? Just stab her.” He too made no motion to reach for the knife.

We all hesitated, then.

“You don’t have to do this,” Amelia said. “Just let me go.”

“Oh, for the love of the Gods,” Ruth cursed. “Sienna, come and take the wheel.”
