Chapter 469

Amelia’s POV

*25 fonus

I stood in the corner during the meeting of the Alphas, watching and trying to understand what was happening I knew at once that things were troublesome, that apparently Jake’s old servant watching for so long had left some severe holes in the kingdom’s security, and now the rogues could take advantage of that.

That Claire, Sienna, and lan were among the rogues now also didn’t make me feel better about anything Those three particularly had a vendetta against me, and I was certain they would want to see that realized. They were probably hoping to use the war to get close to me.

Damien kept looking at me throughout the meeting and I knew that he likely worried about this too. Maybe even more than I did.

Since the attack, his Alpha protective instincts have seemed to totally overload him. Even now, I could see his hands twitching. I wondered how much he had to fight to keep from throwing me over his shoulder and dragging me home.

When the meeting ended, he approached me. Through grit teeth and with clenched fists, he told me, “I would like to take you home now. You need… rest.”

I could tell how much he was struggling to frame this request in this way. I didn’t doubt that he wasn’t going to accept a rejection this time, but in truth, in this moment, I was tired. And, in seeing how hard he was trying to be considerate of my feelings, I felt my own sort of compassion.

We still needed to talk about so many things, but we could do that from the comfort of home. We didn’t need to be here anymore.

“Okay,” I said, and the relief in his gaze was palpable. He held out his hand for me, and I took it. His grip was tight. While it didn’t hurt, it reminded me of a shackle. For now, I would tolerate it.

When we arrived home, he released me. It was very late by now and the children were asleep. Still, we relieved Lillian so that she could get to the hospital and see Jake. She nearly cried when we told her he was doing better. After a quick hug, she walked out the door.

Damien closed and locked it behind her. Then he gave instruction to the guard at the door, “No guests. No one in or out for the rest of the night without my permission.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

I moved into the living room, needing some space for a moment to collect my thoughts. I knew he would come to me and then we would talk. At least, I hoped that was the case. Sometimes, when it came to matters of protecting me and the kids, Damien did all of the speaking and none of the listening.

That didn’t exactly count as a conversation, I didn’t think.

I wrapped my arms around myself, rubbing my hands up and down my arms to try to give myself the comfort of warmth and touch. With the distance between Damien and my hearts, the world felt so cold and tense.

I felt the air change when Damien entered the room. Everything amplified, like it was suddenly charged with a new kind of static electricity.

“Amella,” Damien said.

I turned toward him, feeling a bit like I was ready to go to war right now, in this moment. Only instead of trying to defending the pack, I wanted to defend our relationship while keeping my own boundaries and sanity,

“I’ve agreed to come home because I’m tired, but I’m not staying here forever,” I told him, trying to make my boundaries as clear as possible right from the start.

“You heard what Alpha King Benedict said,” Damien told me, “We are now a pack preparing for war. The rogues are going to attack us, it’s only a matter of when. We have to be ready,”

“I can help.”

“You can help by staying safe.”

“That’s not helping the pack,” I said. “Not really,”
