Chapter 476
Chapter 476
Damien’s POV

Working in tandem with Alpha King Benedict, with Benedict even commandeering my office, I expected to have my every directive totally overridden, especially in matters dealing with the fugitives and rogues.
Yet Benedict sat quiet and watchful as I gave orders to Keegan and my other assistants and guards. With how closely he was observing me, I felt as if I was being tested.
Instead of commanding me to do things, Benedict made suggestions based on his own vast experience.
“It won’t be enough to send spies into the rogue territory,” Benedict said. “They will be on guard now. It might be easier to find a rogue who is dissatisfied with their lot, and convince them to turn to our side.”
While I didn’t like the idea of accepting rogues into the pack, I supposed offers could be made if it helped with the long-term goal of staving off this war.
The rogues had all the intel right now, while we were fumbling around in the dark. I was willing to take whatever help I could get. Now wasn’t the time to be choosy.
“We have some rogues in prison,” I said. “Petty crimes. Shoplifting mostly. Perhaps they could be swayed.”
Benedict nodded like he approved. Maybe I had passed his test.
I gave the order then settled in for a long morning of reading reports.
“I have a scenario for you to consider,” Alpha Benedict said.
Maybe I hadn’t passed his test, after all. At least, not yet.
I looked up from the reports, back to the Alpha King. “I’m listening.”
“What would you do if you had to make a choice between saving your family and preserving your pack?” Benedict asked. “If you could only choose one?”
“That would be unacceptable,” I said at once. “I would find a way to save both.”
“I’m saying that saving both wouldn’t be possible.”
“And I’m saying that I would never accept that outcome.” On this, I was firm. My family was most important to me, and I would protect them with my own life. But so too would I protect my pack. “The only way I would allow either my family or my pack to fall would be if I am dead.”
I anticipated more pushback from Benedict. Whatever this game was he was playing with me, he likely wouldn’t accept an answer like that.
That was the only answer he would receive though, no many how many times he asked, or how he tried to word the question.
Instead, he looked at my critically as if he was studying my face.
I held his gaze, keeping my face neutral but stern, showing I was serious and that I would not be swayed from my decision in this.

After a long moment, he nodded, “Good.”
I blinked, surprised by that reaction.
He chuckled slightly. “A good Alpha protects all. You gave the correct answer,”
Even though I was annoyed he had bothered me with this game at all, I was simultaneously pleased that I had passed this test.
Benedict sat behind my desk, so I had to take one of the smaller, Jess comfortable chairs. I felt some mild back pain after an hour, but fortunately, my strong healing factor did not have me suffer for long,
A bit after this, Amella came in carrying some more documents,
“Good morning, Alpha King,” she said formally.
“You can place those papers here on the desk, Amella. Thank you,” Benedict said,
Amelia lowered the papers, gave me a soft, nervous smile, and then turned and walked back out of the office.
When she was busy speaking with Keegan and out of earshot of us, Benedict looked at me. “I’ve been informed that you haven’t tried to restore her memories.”
“I have not,” I said.
“She should remember her uncle,” he said.

I stayed quiet.
“There are other things you do not want her to remember,” he said.
I looked away.
“Damien,” Benedict said, leaning forward. “Why don’t you want to try to restore Amelia’s memory?”
“She experienced a lot of hurt,” I said.
“Many good memories too?” Alpha King Benedict asked.
“Mostly hurt.”
Benedict hummed. Leaning back again, the chair squeaked as he repositioned his weight. “Hurt that you caused, I presume.”
Directly or indirectly, yes. But I wasn’t about to admit that out loud. I couldn’t. To do so would make the guilt so heavy I’d probably choke on it. “There’s no reason for her to relive those moments.”
Benedict watched me closely. “You do understand, don’t you? She will remember on her own someday, and the longer you hide the truth from her, the worse things will be.”
“Maybe,” I said, but I was secretly hoping that she wouldn’t remember.
She had a right to those memories of course. They were the truthful experiences from her past. But they had also been so needlessly hurtful to her. I would do anything to spare her from that pain again.

“You may think you are choosing her health and well-being by keeping her in the dark,” Benedict said. “You say that the past will hurt her, and you are right. It will. But do not for a moment try to fool me or yourself inte believing that your primary goal here isn’t to save your own skin.”
“I only want to protect her,” I said, but my resolve felt shaken.
Benedict wasn’t entirely wrong. I didn’t want Amella to think less of me. This memory reset for her had given me the chance to do things correctly this time when I had flubbed them so terribly in the past.
Now, we could be the loving family we should have been from the start, before I made so many mistakes that pushed her away.
If she remembered what I did, would she want to leave me again?
