Chapter 498

Damien’s POV

I didn’t have any idea what could have compelled Phil to want to challenge me. Before this moment, he had been an upstanding member of the pack. An accountant, he wasn’t a warrior or a guard. As far as I knew, he had no great love for fitness, and I knew he wasn’t an Alpha.

How could he think he had a chance against me?

But that was irrelevant to my purposes at the moment. It didn’t matter if this was a one-sided blowout, I still had to face him. No challenge against an Alpha could go unanswered, even if it was misguided.

Turning from Phil, I walked through the gathering crowd to the nearby sparring ring. Sometimes challenges were made into grand events, but that didn’t seem necessary in this case. I didn’t want to underestimate my opponent, but it really didn’t seem like he had a chance.

He had to know it too, didn’t he? I glanced behind me to see him following me. His head was high with defiance, even if he was a bit pale. His hands were shaking somewhat nervously until he clenched them into fists.

The trainer for the day came over to be our referee.

“You have three minutes to fight as a human before you are to shift,” the trainer said. “The first one thrown from the ring, knocked unconscious, or to surrender loses the fight. Do you both understand?”

“I do,” Phil said.

“I understand,” I agreed.

The trainer stepped back, leaving the two of us alone in the ring. He signaled to a stand nearby where a makeshift bell had been installed for the sparring purposes. It would make do now.

I stretched out my arms and legs, readying myself. Then I stood tall and straight, waiting for the bell.

Across from me, Phil lifted up his fists into a fighting stance.

The bell rang, the fight officially began.

Phil darted forward. He was quick enough for a regular werewolf, but for an Alpha, he might as well have been moving as slow as molasses. Before he could even reach me, I grabbed him by the shoulder with one hand and chucked him to the side.

Immediately he flew out of the ring and then rolled across the stones of the park space. Some onlookers stepped out of the way. Finally, halfway across, he skidded to a stop.

The trainer looked between Phil and me. He didn’t seem surprised when he said, “The winner is Alpha Damien. Alpha Damien remains pack alpha!”

Some people clapped lightly, maybe out of politeness, but most people seemed just as confused as I had been.

What on earth could have possessed Phil to pick a fight with me, when he had to know he would be so outmatched?

As the crowd began to disperse, returning to their training, I moved to Phil still on the ground and reached down
