Chapter 499
“Yes,” he said. “It was a long time ago, before I became Alpha King and brought peace to the packs. Back then, war was always a threat, and the wolves of the pack instinctively became more aggressive. With a war looming, people’s natural wolf instincts are overriding their sense.”
That didn’t bode well. “Should I prepare for more challenges?”
“Perhaps,” Alpha King Benedict said. “Their aggression is rising, but until the war actually starts, that aggression has no healthy place to go.”
I hummed, understanding. It was just like how Amelia’s wolf ran for freedom when given the chance. These wolves were finally feeling the needed amplified aggression that came with training and planning for war. Now they were acting on their base instincts.
They wanted to fight someone, anyone, and I was the biggest target.
Knowing every member of my pack, though there were several good warriors, I didn’t think there were any that could actually take me in a fight. My role of Alpha wasn’t in danger from these challenges, but my time and
energy sure was.
As Alpha, I needed to take the time to plan and strategize, as well as to continue to run the pack. If everyone was trying to fight me all the time, and I was obligated to accept every challenge, I would soon run out of time to do the work I actually needed to do to run the pack.
What a headache.
Although… Perhaps there was a way to use this to our advantage. If aggression was running high, and so was tension, maybe giving people a healthy outlet would benefit everyone. They could fight to their hearts content, while also lifting morale somewhat.
A tournament would be perfect for that.
“I have an idea,” I said.
Benedict looked at me closely. “Let’s hear it.”
“We can hold a tournament of champions, including any pack member who wants to participate, barring Alphas,” I said. There was no reason for me to participate. It was the other pack members who were experiencing these feelings. “We could make it an event. People could bet and have fun. We could say it’s a tournament to find the pack’s strongest member.”
Alpha King Benedict nodded. “Yes, that would work. We’ve done similar things like that in the past.”
Now it was my turn to study him. If he knew that would work, why didn’t he suggest it? Once more, as many times before now, I was feeling as if he was testing me.
Did he believe I wasn’t doing a good job as Alpha? Or was this about something else?
I really didn’t know.
For now, I couldn’t think about it overmuch. There was plenty of other things to worry about.

“We could hold the event in your honor, Alpha King,” I said. “That would give people another reason to celebrate.”
“Very wise, Damien. Very wise.”
I was still confused about his motives here, but I was glad to have his approval.
“I’ll start the arrangements at once,” I said.
Amelia’s POV
I was tired from my run, so I didn’t exercise as much today. Still, I turned on the training channel, just to keep my mind learning, even as my body rested.
Just after lunchtime, they started showing a type of ad between the different training sessions. It was quickly thrown together, just some text on the screen.
