Chapter 515
Claire’s POV
It was bad enough for our rogue champion to lose. It was even worse for him to have lost to Amelia.
All of us were moving like we had weights in our shoes, slowly moving one foot in front of the other, shuffling forward as we made our way to the border, to sneak back to our new home.
The mood hanging over all of us was somewhat grim, though it was worse for Sienna and me. Something about losing to Amelia yet again didn’t sit right inside of us.
Peter wasn’t a patient man, and while his brute strength had taken him straight to the finals, when he was finally matched with someone faster than he was, he couldn’t handle being second-best. He let his anger get the best of him, and then he acted rashly, shifting to attack Amelia.
He reminded me of Ian, too impulsive.
If he had played the long game, like I always tried to do, then maybe he wouldn’t have been so hotheaded as to basically take himself out of the game. He could have outlasted Amelia, if he had the patience.
What a disappointment. What a waste.
On the battlefield, Peter would have been an asset but he was never the right man for a tournament like this.
It also annoyed me how strong Amelia had become. Was her wolf really that powerful? It all felt like some kind of big hoax. If it hadn’t been a rogue how had been ultimate defeated, I would have thought this all a big scam, like a PR campaign to make a weak Luna more likeable.
But Peter hadn’t been faking it.
Sienna and I were taking it the hardest, but Richard was just downright angry. He wasn’t the type to get loud when he was mad. Instead, he got quieter, without any emotion in his voice. He was walking with tension all through his body though. His hold on Ruth’s arm was gentle, but the rest of him looked like a snake coiled up ready to strike.
“It doesn’t upset me that he lost,” Richard was saying to Ruth. When I pulled myself out of my own misery, I focused on what he was saying. “What upsets me is the nature of the loss. His hothead attitude nearly cost him his life.”
We’d always expected that he would get captured. When he won, the plan was that he would unmask himself and reveal to everyone that the pack champion was actually a rogue. Instead, Peter had basically embarrassed himself, being taken out first by Amelia and then by Damien.
Now he was sitting in a prison with nothing to show for himself but some bruises and probably a broken nose. After that punch from Damien, I doubted it would ever heal the same.
“He should have resigned himself and left with us to fight another day,” Richard continued.
“I don’t know if it’s all that bad,” Ruth said.
Richard, Sienna, and I all looked at her like she had lost her mind. She shrugged.

“Sure, Peter didn’t win, but he made it to second in the tournament. They can’t dispute his power, even if they try to erase him from their records. The people here, they still saw it happen, they still cheered for him, our rogue champion,” Ruth said. “And they only had one warrior who could stand against him, and even then in speed, not in strength. And it took the pack Luna to do so.”
I held my tongue, not wanting to ruin the moment by telling her that Amelia wasn’t any kind of great warrior.
If that was something that helped them cope with this moment, then who was I to ruin that?
I still knew though, and it kept Ruth’s words from fully helping me recover.
“Peter was just one of our warriors,” Ruth continued. “When they are faced with the whole of our army, they will be overrun. The Alpha and Luna cannot fight all of us on their own, and their own warriors are useless against us.”
That thought did help me a little. Imagining Damien and his pack getting crushed under a rogue rebellion was the kind of image that could always lift my spirits.
“If it helps,” I said. “I doubt Damien will even let Amelia fight in the battle. He’s so protective, he’d probably ship her away or lock her in a closet or something to keep her safe.”
“Definitely,” Sienna agreed. “If he doesn’t, then Jake or my parents will. They are all overly protective, it’s disgusting.”
Ruth wrapped her free hand around Sienna’s arm. “We are your parents now.”
“Right,” Sienna said. “I didn’t mean… It’s tough sometimes.”
“It will get easier,” Ruth said with a nod.
Richard stared straight ahead and the rest of us continued on in silence. But, with a few glances toward the Rogue King, I could see that Ruth’s words had comforted him.
He didn’t speak again though until we had successfully sneaked back into rogue territory.
Then he said, “You are right, Ruth. And more, they think themselves so confident now, praising their Luna, believing that they had won anything here today with this. When, in truth, they have don’t nothing but build themselves up just to fall farther.”
“Yes,” Ruth said. “I’m pleased you can see it this way.”
“I can. Thank you, my love.” Richard lifted Ruth’s hand to his own and kissed it. He seemed in much better spirits now, determined and happy. “We must push up our plans for attack, hitting them when they are at their most overconfident, most unprepared.”
“Most vulnerable,” Ruth said.
“Yes.”
It was interesting, watching this pair be so in sync. I could see how they worked so well, despite the distance that kept them apart for so long. Their hearts seemed to be in sync, as well as was their pride for their rogues.
People like them have kept the hopes of a rebellion alive for a very long time, slowly building everything up so

that the rogues could have the strength and resources that they had now.
