Chapter 516
Damien’s POV

Amelia’s words struck me down to my core. This doesn’t change anything. We had just made some of the most passionate love that we ever had, but she was willing to overlook that, to forget it, to throw it all away to maintain this distance between us.
It took time for me to calm down and accept it, to remember that this was a just punishment for all of the terrible things I had done, the lies and the rest.
I so easily fell into her and the way things had been. My feelings for her so easily overwhelmed me. Too quickly, I forgot that things between us were not perfect and that maybe they never would be again.
“We should get back,” Amelia said. Looking around, she blushed slightly, perhaps remembering the things we did. I could still taste her on my tongue, still scent her in the air.
I would carry what we had done with me for a long, long time yet. Possibly forever.
As much as I wanted to stay here in this moment, she was right. We couldn’t linger. We had to get back.
Amelia had won the tournament. She had earned her award, and it was time she received it.
I walked out of the tent, confident she would follow me. I sensed that she did, keeping pace with me as we went back to the main event ring, where Benedict was still standing, and the crowd remained gathered.
“There she is,” Benedict said, when he saw Amelia approaching behind me. “Come over here, champion, and accept your award! Damien, stand beside me.”
I hated that I needed the Alpha King to direct me, to pull me out of my wandering thoughts once more. I was still in somewhat of a state of shock. I had seen the battle myself, but to connect Amelia to Shadow and know that she had trained enough to become the pack’s champion just seemed so farfetched.
She had been my human mate, the one I had pulled from the human realm myself. Now, she was a strong werewolf warrior. I couldn’t wrap my mind around it. For her sake, I was trying, but it made my head spin.
I wasn’t alone in this feeling. Looking out over the crowd, I could see many confused faces as all of my people, like me, were forced to see Amelia in a new light now. Most of them adjusted more quickly than I did, however, because they cheered for their Luna as Alpha King Benedict bestowed Amelia with a medal for her victory.
“We present you, your Luna Amelia! The champion of the pack!” Alpha King Benedict said loudly, and the crowd erupted in cheers.
I stood there somewhat frozen, until Benedict elbowed me. Then I clapped politely.
Amelia waved to the crowd, who cheered more.
I admit her skills were impressive. She had even managed to take down an infiltrating rogue. I cringed now, imaging what might have happened if Crow had won the event.
Amelia was a much better choice than that, and I was pleased, under my bluster, that she was so talented and that the pack could finally see her gifts enough to properly appreciate her.

What I didn’t like….
Benedict shook Amelia’s hand. “I will expect to see you on the battlefield,” he told her.
That. That was what I didn’t like.
Amelia grinned. “Thank you.”
I seethed, my anger swirling with the rampaging need to protect swelling up inside of myself. I didn’t care what anyone else said, even the Alpha King. My mate was not going to be on the battlefield. I would not see her put herself into danger.
My credence and code was to protect her, my family, and my pack.
