“You still don’t trust me. You are going to leave yourself open if you can’t trust me during the fight.”

Damien paused at then. Then he sighed. “You want to prove to me that you don’t need my protection?”

“Yes,” I said.

“Then fight me.” He looked back at me, his eyes bearing down into mine. “Spar with me, right here, right now, and show me you are capable.”

“Fine,” I said. “I will, and you’ll see how far I’ve come.”

He nodded. “Not by road,” he said. “Follow me.”

He shifted, so I did too, and together we raced into the forest a ways, until we reached a clearing surrounded by trees with a carpet of grass and wildflowers.

There, he shifted back to human form and stood ready. I shifted too, got into my fighting stance, and rushed him. He dodged out of the way of my attack, and then again.

I threw punch after punch, and he ducked and weaved like my speed was nothing.

Not once did he try to make a move against me in return.

“You are holding back,” I said after another few misses. I stepped back. “If you aren’t going to take this seriously, then what are we doing here?”

His stern expression had not changed once during the entire encounter, and did not change now either.

“You want me to use my full strength?” he asked.

“Yes,” I said.

“Ready yourself.”

I lifted my fists.

In a blink, I went from standing upright to being flat on my back on the grass. Damien had cradled my head and my hip, so that my fall wasn’t a hard one. But he moved his hands now, grabbing my wrists and pinning them to either side of my head.

Gods, I hadn’t even seen him move.

It was sexy as hell, but I pushed those thoughts back and away. This was a serious moment.

I couldn’t allow him to see me lacking. I struggled against his hold, but he didn’t budge an inch.

Humiliated, I growled a little, frustrated and annoyed. “You’ve made your point.”

“No,” he said. He lowered his face toward mine. I thought he might kiss me, but he stopped a few mere inches away. “You’re skills are good. You are fast. But you will never be able to best an Alpha. The rogue leader, I’ve been told, has an Alpha’s strength. If you see him on the battlefield, you run. You do not engage him. You call for me. I will handle this Rogue King.”

Fury flashed in Damien’s eyes, and I knew he was dead serious about this.

It sounded like he was willing to let me fight on the battlefield, but likely only if I agreed to these terms. How could I not?

“Okay,” I told him. To soothe him, I tilted my head away a little, exposing my neck in a more submissive pose.

I wanted to fight, but I had no intention of taking on an Alpha.

He looked at me, and at my neck, and another kind of fire seemed to spark in his gaze.

In another blink, he was away from me, standing near the edge of the clearing, “I need to go for a run.”
