**Amelia’s POV**

My heart raced, pounding against my ribcage like a wild stallion desperate to break free. Each thump reverberated in my ears, drowning out the world around me. The air felt thick, almost suffocating, as if every breath I attempted to take was met with resistance. Words that had once danced effortlessly in my mind now fled like frightened birds, leaving me grappling with a whirlwind of emotions that threatened to overwhelm me.

The emotional divide between Damien and me was not merely a figure of speech; it was a tangible barrier that loomed large, making every attempt to communicate feel like an insurmountable challenge. As I stood before him once again, anxiety coiled tightly around my chest, squeezing the clarity from my thoughts. Each word I sought to express felt foreign, as if I were reaching across an abyss that seemed impossible to bridge. In the midst of my hesitation, Damien’s voice sliced through the tension with a confidence that both comforted and unsettled me.

“Are you ready to come home?” he asked, his tone steady, imbued with an assurance that stirred conflicting feelings within me.

His certainty ignited a spark of courage in my heart, urging me to gather my scattered thoughts and respond. I needed to reclaim my voice, to assert my needs in this fraught conversation.

“No. Nothing like that,” I replied, surprising myself with the steadiness of my tone, even as doubt lingered like a shadow at the edges of my mind.

I tried to summon the image of the man I had once loved with every fiber of my being. In those earlier days, I would have shared my deepest fears and insecurities with him without a second thought. Now, however, the emotional chasm between us felt so vast that it could easily swallow me whole.

Yet, I understood that I had to remain resolute. For the sake of my unborn child, I needed to stand firm in my convictions, to assert my independence.

“I’ve been having regular checkups with Healer Eve,” I stated, my voice gaining strength as I pressed on. “About the baby…”

A heavy silence descended, thick enough to stifle any remaining hope. The tension hung in the air, pressing down on me like an unwelcome weight, constricting my chest with each passing second.

“How is the baby?” Damien’s voice broke through the stillness, laced with genuine concern. “How are you?” His inquiry felt sincere, and I fought against the instinct to soften in response. I couldn’t allow myself to lean into his concern; I had a favor to ask, and I needed to stay focused.

“I need to ask you to allow something, for me and for our child,” I said, swallowing hard, my throat dry as I prepared to lay my request bare. This was my moment of truth, and I silently prayed that the remnants of his feelings for me would sway him to grant my plea, even though I understood that his feelings toward our child were far less affectionate.

“Name it,” Damien replied, his tone unwavering, a stark contrast to the turmoil swirling within me.

“There are limitations to what Healer Eve can do,” I explained, my fingers trembling as I clenched my fist tightly, willing myself to remain steady. “Dr. Wyatt is a specialist in her field. She’s the one who helped me conceive and knows the most about human-werewolf pregnancies.”
