**Night Whispers Forgotten Names – Colin Shah**
**Chapter 61**
As I stood there, my heart pounding like a war drum, I couldn’t shake the weight of the situation pressing down on me. Dr. Wyatt was the very doctor that Amelia had specifically requested, yet the anticipation of her arrival churned a storm of anxiety within me. I took a deep breath, attempting to gather a semblance of calm amid the chaos swirling inside my mind. If Dr. Wyatt truly shared a connection with Amelia, surely she would understand my reluctance regarding this unexpected intrusion into our lives.
“Amelia would not appreciate seeing him,” I asserted, my voice steady despite the tempest of unease raging within. “I have no guarantee that he won’t try to take her away from us again.”
“You are the one who stole her away,” Damien shot back, his tone dripping with resentment, each word a sharp blade aimed at my heart.
I chose to dismiss his bitter retort, my attention firmly fixed on Dr. Wyatt as I awaited her response with bated breath.
“I assure you, we will not be taking Amelia back with us,” Dr. Wyatt stated firmly, her gaze unwavering, radiating a sense of purpose. “Damien has already consented to that.”
“I would prefer to hear him say that himself,” I interjected, crossing my arms tightly, skepticism radiating from me like an electric current.
Damien lifted his chin defiantly, his expression unreadable. “For now, I will not be taking Amelia back with me.”
Though his words were intended to ease the tension, they did little to calm the storm brewing in the room. I recognized the necessity of the situation, yet the very thought of Damien’s presence made my skin crawl. If allowing Dr. Wyatt to proceed was crucial, I had to find a way to endure Damien’s presence.
“I still prefer he remain here,” I insisted, frustration creeping into my tone as I struggled to maintain my composure.
“I’m afraid I must insist otherwise,” Dr. Wyatt replied, her demeanor a blend of professionalism and unwavering firmness. “His presence is not merely for his own concerns or curiosities. As Amelia’s mate, his proximity will likely yield positive benefits for both Amelia’s health and that of their child.”
A heavy sigh escaped my lips, my frown deepening as I processed her words. “You’re absolutely certain about this?”
“Yes,” Dr. Wyatt affirmed, her conviction palpable and unwavering. “Numerous cases illustrate the healing benefits of the mating bond. Therefore, I am asking you, Alpha Jake, to please allow us to proceed.”
With an argument as compelling as that, I found it increasingly difficult to refuse. Amelia’s health and the well-being of our child took precedence over my personal grievances, even if it meant tolerating Damien’s presence.
“Fine,” I relented at last, my voice heavy with resignation. “But your group will be accompanied by my enforcers to ensure that no one finds themselves in any trouble.”
Dr. Wyatt glanced at Damien, seeking his approval. “Are those terms agreeable, Alpha?”
Damien’s expression was one of dissatisfaction, yet he nodded in reluctant agreement.
“Let them through,” I instructed my men, my tone firm and unwavering. Then, softening slightly, I added, “Stay with them. Keep a watchful eye.”
As my enforcers initiated the border clearance, I felt the tension in my shoulders ease just a fraction. Shifting into my wolf form, I took off into the night, the wind rushing past me, a fleeting moment of freedom amidst the turmoil.
**Amelia’s POV**
Today, the thought of my impending checkup filled me with an unsettling sense of dread. Yet, I busied myself with my apprentice duties, hoping to distract myself until Dr. Wyatt arrived. Eve had entrusted me with various tasks, primarily filing, and I could sense her intention was to keep me occupied. Though I recognized her efforts, I couldn’t muster the energy to complain. In fact, it was precisely what I needed—simple tasks to keep my mind too engaged to spiral into anxious thoughts.
I must have spent a considerable amount of time tucked away in the records room, lost in the rhythm of my work. When I finally emerged, I was startled to find that my meeting time was approaching much faster than I had anticipated.
From the nearby nurse’s station, Gwen glanced over at me, her expression a mix of annoyance and curiosity. “Oh, there you are,” she said, her tone dripping with sarcasm. “The Alpha’s been looking for you. I had no idea where you wandered off to.”
