Carter didn’t say anything else. He just turned around and headed for his car. The engine roared to life, shattering the quiet of the night, and Rosie watched as his car disappeared down the street, the shadow swallowed up by darkness.
She stood there, completely stunned. The night breeze stirred the sycamore leaves along the sidewalk, their whispery sound no match for the ringing in her ears. Under the moonlight, her shadow stretched long and lonely across the pavement. Her carefully done makeup was twisted by anger and disappointment. All that pride she carried was gone, leaving nothing but a raw ache of resentment.
Without thinking, Rosie snatched her phone from her bag, pulled up the photo of Lydia she’d secretly snapped at the restaurant, and sent it off, her expression cold and calculating.
The next morning, Lydia was still fast asleep when pounding on her door yanked her awake.
“Lydia, Lydia?” Kylie’s voice was urgent and sharp.
Lydia had no idea what was going on. She forced herself upright, rubbing her aching temples, and shuffled to the door, pushing it open.
“Mom, what is it?”
Kylie looked flustered, shoving her phone in Lydia’s face. “Lydia, look at this. Can you believe someone would make up such lies? Your dad’s already sent people to look into it.”
Lydia blinked at the screen. A headline jumped out at her.
Top Scorer Caught on Secret Date with Mystery Man.
She frowned, scrolling down. There was a photo of her, head bent and eating at the table. The angle was sneaky, catching her face perfectly, but the person sitting across from her was just a blurry shape in white.
She kept scrolling. The comments section was already a mess. Opinions were pouring in, wild and unstoppable.
[I knew these so-called top students were all fake. Who knows what they’re like in private.]

thank u!...
thank u for the upload...
the next chapter is exciting...
the next upload is exciting. i cant wait....
Every chapter is missing a sentence from the end of every chapter. It’s frustrating to try guess what’s missing or said...
