Ready to Rule The Real Heiress Strikes Back (Lydia and Connor) novel Chapter 1260

“Okay, I’ll ask him about it when we get back and see what’s going on.”

Lydia ate a little on the plane, but she was so tired, she drifted right back to sleep.

Next thing she knew, she was waking up in a big, soft bed. The room was completely dark and so quiet she could hear her own breathing. She sat up, reaching out to find the switch on the bedside lamp. Just as her finger brushed the edge, the bedroom door opened quietly.

“Lydia, you’re awake? Do you need anything?” Connor’s voice was soft as he came over and took her hand.

Lydia arched an eyebrow. “Why is it so dark? Why aren’t the lights on?”

The air changed. Suddenly, it felt heavy, almost frozen.

Connor’s eyes went wide. He stared at her, speechless, just taking in her beautiful eyes. He couldn’t get a single word out.

“Connor?” Lydia called, her voice uncertain. “Why aren’t you saying anything?”

He seemed to snap out of it at once, but now he was panicking. He grabbed her hand and pressed it to his face. The rough stubble on his cheek brushed her palm, and when he spoke, his voice shook. “Lydia… you…”

It hurt to talk. Every word felt like it scraped his throat raw.

It was eight in the morning. Outside, the sun was shining. The room was actually filled with light.

Lydia’s fingers traced the lines between his brows, then the tears at the corner of his eyes. She went quiet, letting the silence stretch between them. Suddenly, she lifted her right hand and placed it on her left wrist, checking her pulse.

She stayed like that for a long time, then let her hand fall. A sad little smile tugged at her lips.

So this was it.

Connor pulled her into his arms, holding her so tightly it was like he couldn’t bear to let her go.

“Lydia, how could this happen? Why?” His voice was shaking. He sounded like he was on the verge of tears.

Lydia nodded. “Okay.”

Connor got up, still a little shaky, and went to tell the butler to have the chef cook something for her. Then he headed to his study, dialing Garrett’s number again and again, almost frantically. Every time, he just got that empty busy tone.

Did something happen to Garrett?

He started making calls to people on Garrett’s side, trying to track him down. Maybe only Garrett knew what was really happening with Lydia’s eyes.

Connor forced himself to calm down. When the kitchen was finally done, he carried Lydia’s favorite food upstairs.

He pushed open the bedroom door quietly, but the bed was empty.

His heart jumped. He strode inside, looking around, and finally spotted Lydia standing by the floor-to-ceiling window. Her back was to him, her figure slim and somehow distant.

She heard him come in, but didn’t turn around. She just asked softly, “Is it sunny today?”
