“You’ve got the wrong idea, officer. We’d never hurt anyone. They’re just trying to pin everything on us so they can get away with their own mess. What they did is illegal. Why would we ruin our own lives like that?”
No matter what they asked, Rose wouldn’t admit to hiring anyone. She kept insisting it was all just a misunderstanding and wouldn’t stop asking to call Kylie, saying Kylie could clear her name.
Lydia just laughed at that. Even now, Rose was still trying to use her own mom as some kind of magic shield.
Parker was even harder to crack. Sitting there in the interrogation room, he stuck to the same line. He hadn’t hired anyone to go after Lydia, he just wanted to talk. That was it. He wouldn’t say anything else.
Lydia asked Byron for their phones, but as soon as she got them, she realized both Parker and Rose had brand new ones.
Lydia gave a sly smile. “Playing it safe, huh? You even made sure to ditch your old phones and clean up the evidence.”
Parker turned his face away. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. My old phone broke. Of course I got a new one.”
“You failed to abduct me, so you ran off with a huge pile of cash. If you admit it now, maybe you’ll just get a lighter sentence. But if you wait until the police find the proof themselves, you’ll probably end up in prison for the rest of your life.”
That finally got to Parker. He snapped, “You have no proof! You’re just making things up. I could sue you for slander!”
Lydia just raised an eyebrow. “Who says I don’t have proof?” She pulled a black phone out of her bag.
Parker stared at it, a sense of dread creeping over him.
He’d heard that voice before and thought it was just a coincidence. But watching Lydia now, he was sure. He had to swallow his excitement and keep quiet, just taking in the shock. He never imagined the top hacker on all the leaderboards was actually such a young, pretty lady. It was almost unreal.
Parker, meanwhile, was frozen. He couldn’t see the screen, but he could see the way Lydia was working, the way her focus never broke, the sound of her fingers racing over the keys.
He started to panic. He didn’t know much about tech, but even he could tell Lydia was recovering data.
Three minutes later, Lydia finished. She pulled up the call logs, found the right one, and hit play. Suddenly, Parker’s cold, vicious voice filled the room.
“That stupid girl ruined everything for me! I want her out of the Capital, right now. When you get her, take her somewhere abandoned and teach her a lesson. She’s pretty enough, so do what you want with her. When you’re done, just sell her off. After that, whatever happens to her is her own problem.”

Every chapter is missing a sentence from the end of every chapter. It’s frustrating to try guess what’s missing or said...
