Ready to Rule: The Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 409

This truth hit her like a truck. She honestly didn’t know how to handle it. Watching everyone else beam with excitement, she almost burst into tears right then and there.

But she couldn’t let herself cry. If her parents saw her like that, they’d pick up on what she was really thinking. They’d start keeping their guard up around her. And if they ever turned their backs on her for Lydia’s sake and kicked her out of the Norwood family, she could kiss her shot at marrying Mikey goodbye. She was still banking on her grandfather getting better, so he could talk to the Jeffersons about her and Mikey.

“Oh my god,” she blurted out, slapping a hand over her mouth and trying to look shocked. “Oh my god, am I seeing this right? My sister… she’s actually the Miss L I’ve always admired?”

Kylie nodded, looking dreamy. “Yes, Lucinda. I still can’t believe it. And those four contestants your sister brought? Every single one made it into the top ten. A strong leader really does have a strong team.”

Kylie was absolutely glowing. She probably didn’t even realize it, but the second Lydia’s name came up, her whole face would light up—her eyes sparkling, the corners of her lips lifting into a proud smile.

“No wonder she was so confident, saying she was as talented as Miss L. Turns out she is Miss L. She kept it from us all this time. If it weren’t for this competition, who knows how long she would’ve kept it a secret.”

Lucinda meant it as a dig, but Cameron and Kylie just took it as another chance to sing Lydia’s praises.

“Your sister’s just really humble. She doesn’t like to brag.”

“I know, right? Who knows what else she’s capable of that we don’t even know about?”

“She’s just so smart and talented. Makes me feel like I’m not doing enough.”

“You’re right, honey. From now on, we better not embarrass Lydia when we’re out in public.”

Cameron and Kylie both smiled and nodded. “Of course, Lucinda will get some too. It’s just… it feels weird buying Lydia clothes she designed herself. We just want to get her something different this time.”

Lucinda couldn’t help herself. She spoke up, sarcasm dripping from her voice. “You bought Lydia so many clothes and bags, and she never said a word about designing them herself. She even had the LYLX people deliver everything to the house. That’s a lot of trouble to go through.”

She was basically saying Lydia was making money off her own parents, which was ridiculous. If Lydia was Miss L, why not just say so? Why did she keep it a secret so the family would have no idea they were buying her designs?

“Your sister just didn’t want to hurt our feelings. She’s always so thoughtful.”

Lucinda felt like she was about to cry for real.
