Ready to Rule: The Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 589

“They just rely on having the numbers to push us around. My husband is her only son. How could we possibly ignore her?”

Byron listened to Milana, and honestly, he thought she’d lost her mind. Seizing the old lady’s assets?

Lydia was the legendary hacker J, daughter of the richest man in the city, and Connor was a retired major general, head of the Jefferson family in the Capital. Would these two really try to snatch an old woman’s inheritance? No one would buy that story. Byron definitely didn’t.

As Byron glanced between Connor and Lydia, sizing them up, Jenson rushed to explain, “That’s right, officer. My mother owns thirty percent of the company. Lydia isn’t part of the Smith family. She has no claim to any inheritance. She’s just keeping my mother from us because she wants a piece of our family’s fortune.”

Lydia smirked. “So, you’re saying you came to see Grandma out of the goodness of your heart? Not for her money?”

Jenson hesitated, then quickly nodded. “Of course. I’m her only son. She’s bedridden now, so it’s my duty to take care of her.”

“Alright, then. Since you’re so dedicated, you can stay and help take care of Grandma from now on. You can also cover half of her medical bills.”

As soon as Lydia spoke, Jenson’s eyes nearly popped out of his head. Milana looked like she was about to explode from anger. Lydia actually expected them to stay and look after the old lady, and pay half the bills?

“Go ahead and say it in front of the officer. If you refuse, it just proves you’re only here for her assets, not because you care. If that’s the case, don’t bother coming to see her again.” Lydia’s voice was ice cold.

The second Byron and his team walked out the door, Milana’s whole face changed. She turned on Lydia, finger shaking with rage. “Lydia! Your grandma raised you all these years, and now she’s hurt and you won’t even pay her medical bills? You expect us to pay half?”

Connor’s presence seemed to darken the whole room. He glared at Milana, his voice cold. “You’re the ones who insisted on being here to show how much you care. What, was all that just for show in front of the police?”

Milana snapped right back. “This is a family matter. Who asked for your opinion?” Just the thought of paying half those bills made her blood pressure spike. The company was in trouble and they barely had enough at home, where was she supposed to get the money for these hospital bills? It felt impossible.

Lydia didn’t flinch. “I’m Grandma’s rightful heir. And he’s my fiancé. He has more right to be here than you do. Got it?”
