Ready to Rule: The Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 744

Lydia smiled softly and nodded. “Yeah, it’s him.”

William’s face darkened.

Nathaniel pressed his lips together, clearly unimpressed. What was so special about Connor, anyway?

Lucinda’s eyes flickered with calculation, but her voice came out sweet and obedient as she turned to William. “That’s right, Uncle William. You probably haven’t heard yet, but after my sister came back, the engagement shifted to her. She’s actually getting along really well with... the Jefferson family now.”

She knew William and the Jeffersons were political enemies. The Robinsons never mixed with the Jeffersons. Nathaniel never got along well with Chris.

The moment William heard the name Jefferson, his whole expression changed. If he found out that Lydia and Connor were more than friendly, he’d probably lose it.

Sure enough, after Lucinda’s words, William looked even more upset.

He knew about the Norwood and Jefferson alliance, but back then, he’d been too furious with the Norwoods to care what they did. Still, just hearing it now made his blood boil all over again.

Why did it have to be the Jeffersons? Of all the people, why them? What made them so great?

Mabel noticed the tension thickening in the room. She shot Lucinda a look, then cleared her throat and turned to Lydia with a gentle smile. “Lydia, we are glad you’re safe. Rosie has her uncle backing her up, and you do too. You don’t have to be afraid of anyone.”

Lydia blinked in surprise. After all, the Gibsons were Mabel’s side of the family. It was obvious now that her aunt’s relationship with them wasn’t exactly warm.

Kylie started to speak up. “Mabel, about last night... it really made sense for Connor to step in, since...” Her words faded out awkwardly.

Right then, Mabel’s phone rang.

She checked the screen, her eyes turning cold.

She laughed, but there was no humor in it. “Don’t try to guilt-trip me. You made it clear I belong to the Robinsons now, and that I’d never get a dime from the Gibsons. So don’t expect me to care about Gibson business.”

Everyone else in the room was stunned.

Were the Gibsons out of their minds? The Robinsons were a respected, old-money family, and William was their only son. Did the Gibsons really think the Robinsons cared about their money?

Benjamin was left speechless, but with no other options, he pushed on.

“Mabel, I’m sorry. This is our fault. We never should have said those things. Please, I’m begging you. Just ask William to help them out this time, and I’ll owe you, okay?”

Mabel sounded unconvinced. “But you have Jackson, don’t you? If you want them out, all he has to do is make a call.”

Benjamin was clearly embarrassed. “You know how it is... Jackson’s about to get promoted. He can’t risk abusing his position. If anyone finds out and reports him, his career is over...”
