I held out my hand as if I were a patient. As she prepared to check my pulse, I noticed how different my hand was from those of the people in the slums. Their skin was dark and weathered; mine was pale.
She instantly looked up. When she saw me, it felt as if the air had frozen.
“Claire!” Kate lunged across the table to hug me.
Everyone turned to look in our direction.
Allen Ramsey also put down his stethoscope and looked over at me. “You're back.”
It was as if they had been waiting for me all this time.
“Yes. I'm back to fight alongside you.”
My words made the wounded from the war cheer.
“We will take back our land!”
“Yes, we will.”
What I wanted wasn't just to take back territory. I wanted peace for all of Bravenland, for the prosperous to help the less fortunate.
But everything had to wait until Lily was caught.
Just as we were all calming down from the excitement and I was helping Kate with some simple bandaging, Richard walked over. “Lily has been taken back to Hartwell. Let's go back and see what she has to say.”
As I said goodbye to Kate and Allen Ramsey, I saw Allen holding Kate's hand. I realized that in the face of hardship, they had come together.
Some people find their happy ending, while others just block each other.
Back at the prison in Hartwell, Lily was still receiving the highest level of treatment. Even in prison, her cell was a luxury suite.
She was sitting in the middle of the room, her hair in an elegant updo, smoking a cigar by herself. She looked every bit the part of a crime boss.
She wasn't the least bit afraid of us.
