I acknowledged the message and turned the car around to see the imprisoned Richard and Lily.
Unlike last time, the guards were all Helen’s people, which meant Max had quite a few agents positioned here.
Halfway there, I once again heard Lily’s laughter. “You cleared every obstacle for her, but in the end, she’s just as ruthless as her mother. She ruined all your plans, didn’t she?”
I expected Richard to be angry, but his indifferent laugh echoed through the space for a moment.
“Lily, do you know what it feels like to get something back after you’ve lost it? I don’t care what she does. As long as she’s here, that’s all that matters.”
“So you even prepared a coronation for her, while you plan to grow old and die here with me? Richard, you’re hopelessly in love with Claire Floyd.”
My feet froze on the spot. Or rather, I spun around so fast I nearly tripped, quickening my pace to get away.
I ran right into Helen, who grabbed my arm. “What’s wrong? Why are you in such a hurry?”
I shook my head. “It’s nothing.”
“Richard said the coronation for the new emperor is all prepared for you.”
“Yes, I know.”
I walked quickly, afraid that if I looked back, I would lose the resolve to be ruthless with Richard.
“Keep them in separate wings of the palace. Don’t put them together.”
After giving the order, I hurried back to my room.
A sense of helplessness washed over me. Richard, the one I thought I could rely on—his feelings for me were far too complicated.
And as for Max, I had given up all hope.
Our relationship seemed to be nothing more than his endless manipulations, with me playing a part in his plans.
What was the point of a love that wasn’t pure?
Knock, knock—
