Reborn From Regret A Second Chance at Luna’s Heart
Chapter 14
I was already in bed reading when Xenois finally joined me in our bedroom.
He moved around our bedroom with that quietly trying not to disturb me. It didn’t matter because I wasn’t asleep. I kept my eyes fixed on my book, though I hadn’t turned a page in ten minutes.
The mattress dipped as he sat on his side of the bed. I could feel him watching me, probably gathering his courage for whatever conversation he thought we needed to have.
“Ollie’s asleep,” he said finally. “He really loved that story.”
“Hmm,” I responded nonchalantly, still not looking up from my book.
“Luna, can we talk?”
In my previous life, those words would have given me hope that things were going to get better or something like that.
Now I know better. I closed my book slowly and set it on the nightstand.
“About?”
Xenois ran a hand through his hair, a telltale sign of him being nervous about what he wanted to say. “I should have told you earlier. Sophia Kingston is back in town.”
I kept my face neutral not giving him any reaction. I slowly nodded my head as if this were news to me. “I see.”
“She’s been having some trouble with her pack,” he continued speaking searching my face for any signs of anger. “Her son, Riley, is having difficulty controlling his wolf.”
‘And this concerns us how?” I asked, my voice was calm as I looked at him.
He looked taken aback by my lack of reaction. He looked away at his fingers as he continued speaking
‘As Alpha, I’ve promised to help them. It’s my duty to look after all the wolves in our territory.”
I nodded slowly, already aware of all this.
The last time he told me this, it had ended in a screaming night as Xenols yelled that he gets to do whatever he wants to do about the people he cared about and stormed out of the house and didn’t return home three days later. Ollie had been frightened thinking some people had broken into the house with the crashing of vases and mirrors he heard and had cried the entire night.
But this time around I already knew what to expect and I didn’t care anymore. But I did have to give him my answer. “Of course you
Despite the fact that Sophia Kingston isn’t even from this pack anymore. And that will require your attention, I imagine.”
“Yes,” he said, sounding relieved as he realized that I wasn’t going to cause a scene. “I might not be around as much for the next few weeks. Riley needs guidance, and as Alpha-”
“You don’t need to explain,” I interrupted, suddenly tired of the lies he was spouting to my face. “I understand what being Alpha means.”
Xenois frowned slightly, clearly expecting more resistance to this. “Luna, I want you to know that Sophia and I are just friends. We were close in college, but that was years ago.”
I almost laughed at the irony of it-him sitting here, lying to my face, when I knew exactly what he’d been doing. What he would
continue to do.
the door quietly behind him.
He would sleep in his study tonight, as he had done many times in our first life together.
In the darkness, I allowed myself a small smile.
The confrontation had gone exactly as I’d planned. Let him think I was defeated and used to his betrayal. Let him believe that nothing would change this time and I had accepted my fate for not being the one he loved in his life. I needed him to believe I would continue to look the other way while he built his life with Sophia.
It would make what came next so much easier.
The next morning was tense as I prepared breakfast. Ollie sat at the counter, happily eating on dinosaur-shaped pancakes, blissfully unaware of the silent fight that was going between his parents.
“Can I have more syrup, Mom?” he asked, holding up his empty plate.
“One more pancake,” I agreed, flipping a stegosaurus onto his plate. “Then we need to get you ready for school.”
I heard the footsteps approaching as Xenois was heading down then the footsteps paused in the doorway, as if unsure of his welcome.
“Morning,” he said cautiously.
“Dad!” Ollie’s face lit up seeing him as he said “Mom made dinosaur pancakes again!”
“I can see that, Xenois said, moving to ruffle our son’s hair. “They look delicious.”
