The man at the front of the group was tall and imposing, with silver hair and cold eyes that held no warmth or compassion. When he spoke, his voice carried the weight of absolute authority.

“We’re here on reports of illegal witchcraft being performed on pack territory,” he announced, his gaze sweeping over both of us with obvious disdain. “We have orders to take any practitioners into custody for questioning and eventual execution.”

My blood turned to ice at his words. They were here for Lyn, here to arrest and kill the person who was trying to save my son’s life. I

moved to stand beside Lynn, letting my own wolf energy rise to the surface as I prepared to defend the person who had become our only

hope.

“You will not take another step,” Lynn snarled, her canines extending as her transformation began. “I am the acting Luna of this pack,

and I’m ordering you to leave immediately.”

The elder’s expression didn’t change, but I caught a glimpse of something that looked almost like amusement in his cold eyes. He

gestured behind him with one hand, and two more figures were dragged from the elevator.

My heart stopped as I realized what I was looking at. Two people in tattered clothes, their hands bound with what looked like lead

cuffs, their faces gaunt and hollow from obvious mistreatment. But it was their eyes that gave them away – the same otherworldly quality

that I’d seen in Lyn’s gaze when they worked magic.

They were witches. Captured witches being used as weapons against their own kind.

Lynn recognized what she was seeing at the same moment I did, her growl deepening as she prepared to launch herself at the elders. But before she could move, the captive witches raised their bound hands and clenched them into fists.

Pain exploded through my chest like nothing I’d ever experienced before. It felt like someone had reached inside my ribcage and was slowly crushing my heart in their grip, squeezing tighter and tighter until I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, couldn’t do anything but fall

to my knees gasping for air.

Beside me, Lynn was experiencing the same agony, her hands clawing at her chest as she struggled against the magical attack. Even in my pain, I could hear her trying to speak, her words coming out in broken gasps.

‘Hypocrites, she managed to choke out, her voice barely audible over the sound of our labored breathing. “Keeping… witches… in

captivity…”

The elder’s cold smile widened slightly. “These practitioners serve the greater good,” he said calmly, as if we weren’t writhing in agony at his feet. “They help us eradicate the illegal magic users who threaten pack security. Their sacrifice ensures that dangerous individuals like your friend in there can be properly contained.”

The pressure on my heart increased, and black spots began dancing at the edges of my vision. I tried to fight against the magic holding me, tried to shift into my wolf form, but the pain was too overwhelming. All I could do was gasp and struggle as consciousness

slowly slipped away from me.

My last coherent thought before darkness claimed me was a desperate prayer for Ollie’s safety, and terror for what would happen to Lyn and Zade now that the elders had discovered their secret. The magical light that had been our beacon of hope had instead become our beacon of doom, calling down judgment on the very people who had risked everything to save my son.

As I lost consciousness, I could hear the elder giving orders to his guards, his voice growing more distant as I faded away.

“Secure the witch in the hospital room and bring them to the containment facility. And make sure the child survives – we may have

use for him as leverage.”

Then there was nothing but darkness, and the echo of my own heartbeat slowly returning to normal as the magical grip on my chest

finally released.
