Chapter 22
Sophia
The phone buzzed again as I reached for it on the table and checked who was calling.
It was Xenois. Perfect timing.

I took a deep breath, composing myself before answering. This was my chance to turn today’s meeting with Lumina to my advantage.
“Hello, Xenois,” I said, sounding sad and disappointed about my day.
“Sophia, how are you? I wanted to check in on you and Riley. How was your day?”
His voice sounded warm and concerned towards me and I felt a familiar ache in my chest.
This was the Xenois I remembered from years ago, the one who used to care about my well-being above everything else.
“It was… difficult,” I said as I sat down on the couch nearby and allowed exhaustion to color my next words.
“I took Riley to the grocery store to pick up some things for dinner, and we ran into your wife.”
There was silence on the other end of the call before he spoke. “Lumina was at the store?”
way.
“Yes, with Ollie. And Xenois…” I trailed off, as if I was trying to choose my next words carefully so I would not paint his wife in a bad
“I tried to be polite, to make conversation for the sake of our children, but she was so cold to me. So hostile.”
“What do you mean hostile?”
I closed my eyes, thinking of the perfect lie to tell him. “She made it very clear that Riley and I weren’t welcome here. She said some
things… things I don’t want to repeat in front of Riley. The poor boy was so confused and hurt. He’d been excited about possibly making a
friend in Ollie, but after the way Lumina spoke to us…”
“What exactly did she say, Sophia?”
He was getting more concerned and more importantly angry but not with me. But towards her.
Good. This was exactly what I needed.
“She told me that I should know my place,” I said, allowing my voice to break before I sniffed and continued speaking although I sounded like I was crying.

“That just because you and I have history doesn’t mean I belong in this pack. She was… she was quite cruel about it, actually. Made some comments about Riley not having a real father because his father is dead and no matter what you would never be there for him not when you have Ollie to look after.
The silence on the other end was loud enough to know that Xenois was fuming. I could practically hear Xenois’s anger building.
“She said what?”
“I don’t want to cause problems between you two,” I continued quickly, playing the part of the good hearted victim.
“I know she’s your wife, and I respect that. But Xenois, the way she looked at Riley… it broke my heart. He’s just a child, and he doesn’t understand why someone would be so mean to him.”
“I’m sorry, Sophia. That’s something that should have never happened. It’s unacceptable behavior coming from her.”
“I just… I don’t know if this was a good idea, coming back here. Maybe Riley and I should consider leaving town. I don’t want to be the cause of tension in your family.”
“No.” His response was immediate and final. “Don’t even think about leaving. This is your home too, and Riley deserves to know where his mother once grew up and he deserves to have a father figure in his life as well. I’ll handle Lumina.”
I smiled to myself hearing this words from him. Hook, line, and sinker.
“I appreciate that, but please don’t make it worse for me,” I said softly, playing with the strands of my hair. “I just want to stay here peacefully and mind my business and that of my son especially since we are still guests. Maybe in time, she’ll come to accept us.”
“She will, because I’ll make sure she does. This behavior is completely out of line.”
“Xenois, you don’t need to-”
“Yes, I do. You’re my friend and most importantly the mother to Riley, and you deserve respect. Both you and Riley do.”
There was another pause again before he spoke again, his voice sounding intimate as he said,
“I was thinking about coming over tonight, Spending some time with Riley, maybe having dinner with you both. Would that be
alright?”
For a moment, I was tempted to answer him but I then remembered that I had hit Riley.
And I didn’t want Xenois to see him before his wounds heal.
“I… I don’t think tonight would be good,” I said, sounding disappointed about it as well.
“After what happened today, I just need some time to process everything. Riley’s pretty upset too, and he locked himself in his room. I

don’t think he’s coming out again tonight. I think we both need a quiet evening to ourselves.”
“Are you sure? I hate the thought of you dealing with this alone.”

“I’m sure. But maybe… maybe tomorrow? We could have lunch together, just the three of us. That is, if you think it’s appropriate for
us especially with the ways things are.”
“Of course it’s appropriate. You’re family, Sophia. Don’t let anyone make you feel otherwise.”
“Thank you, Xenois. That means more to me than you know.”
“I’ll pick you both up at noon tomorrow, I’ll clock out early from the office then we will have some uninterrupted time just the three of us. We’ll go somewhere nice, maybe that little café by the lake that you used to love. I have a feeling Riley would like it as well”
“That sounds perfect,” I said softly, smiling to myself as I laid down on the couch properly.
“And Xenois? Thank you for believing me about today. I was worried you might think I was overreacting.”
“Never. I know you, Sophia. You wouldn’t lie about something like this.”
If only he knew.
After we hung up, I sat back on the couch, feeling satisfied about the whole thing.
Phase one was complete. Now I just had to wait for Xenois to confront Lumina, and for them to have a huge fight and I’ll comfort
Xenois, taking care of him.
I toyed with the bracelet that Andy had given me. With this I was sure to get all his attention on me. It seemed like the little witch
knew exactly how to cast spells that would make Xenois focus on me and love me instead of his mate.
Perfect.
