Chapter 223
LYN

I decided on the second day since Xenois left to give the cure to Marcus that I couldn’t stay away from Zade’s room any longer. My nerves were about to give out by staying in my room trying not to crowd Zade especially when he hadn’t asked for me to stay specifically and I didn’t want to assume that I had that sort of authority especially with everything unsaid going between us.
As much as the temporary antidote Riley had provided was working wonders, I still needed to see for myself that he was resting and recovering properly, because that curse was no mere curse. The curse marks on his skin had faded somewhat, and the pain seemed to be manageable now like a dull ache in the bones, which only hurt when he exaggerated his strength, but that didn’t mean he should be pushing himself.
When I reached his bedroom door, I knocked softly to alert him to my presence before entering inside the room, closing the door softly.. “Zade? How are you feeling?”
The room was empty.
Panic shot through me like lightning. Where was he? Has the antidote stopped working? Did something happen to him all alone while we were all distracted with other crises?
I rushed through the house, checking the kitchen, the living room, even the bathrooms, growing more frantic with each empty space I encountered. I was this close to raising an alarm but I needed to let my sister and Lumina know what was happening first before causing chaos and confusion. Finally, I heard the low murmur of voices coming from his home study, and I ran toward the sound, praying that he was among the voices that I was faintly hearing.
I burst through the study door, without bothering to knock only to find Zade sitting at his desk, very much alive and apparently fine without any issues from his curse, with Rivers standing beside him. They both had files spread across the desk surface, and I caught fragments of their conversation about witch territories and something called Shadow City. Shadow city? He wouldn’t dare think about going to such a barren land where werewolves were frowned on and killed for pleasure.
“What the hell are you doing?” I demanded, my panic immediately transforming into fury as I couldn’t believe the nerve of this Alpha. You’re supposed to be resting!”
Zade looked up at me with that stubborn expression I knew all too well, and he was preparing to be an asshole right now.
“I’m fine, Lyn. The antidote is working, and I can’t just lie in bed doing nothing while everyone else is trying to solve this crisis that we got going on.”
“You absolutely can and should be lying in bed doing nothing,” I shot back, moving closer to the desk, willing myself not to use my powers on him. He was weak, I kept chanting to myself as I gritted my teeth.
“The antidote is temporary, remember? You need to conserve your strength so that you won’t become weaker when the time is dire, not waste it on paperwork that other people can handle.”

Rivers cleared his throat uncomfortably glancing between the both of us before staring at the door like it was promising him paradise.
‘I’ll just… leave you two to discuss this privately,” he said, already backing toward the door.
“Stay,” Zade ordered, not taking his eyes off me. “This concerns pack business and you are needed here..”
“Actually,” Rivers replied with a nervous laugh scratching the back of his neck as he looked at Zade and continued, “I think Thorne mentioned something about needing help with… uh… closing the refrigerator. Very urgent refrigerator situation. It definitely requires my
immediate attention.”
I crossed my arms and glared at Zade rolling my eyes in both anger and exasperation.
“Don’t you dare try to hide behind pack business because that is not what this is. This is about you avoiding me, just like you always do whenever something real happens between us.”
“What would I need to avoid you for?” Zade asked, his tone carefully neutral in a way that only made me angrier.
“Are you seriously going to pretend we haven’t talked about that kiss?” I exploded. “Are you going to act like it never happened?”
Rivers made another attempt to escape. “You know what, I really should go help Thorne with that refrigerator emergency.”
“Rivers, I said stay,” Zade repeated firmly.
Rivers looked between us with obvious distress, he clearly didn’t want to be here when this got dirty between us and it seemed that Zade either knew that and was being oblivious on purpose or he was dumb. “Alpha, with all due respect, you don’t anger a witch who can stop your heart with his mind. And this is clearly a relationship problem, not a pack problem because kissing doesn’t affect the inflation or stock rising for the whole pack. I may be ride or die for you, but in relationship disputes, for the sake of peace, the woman is always
right. Or in this case, the witch. I’m leaving.”
And with that, Rivers practically fled from the room banging the door behind him, leaving Zade and me alone with all the tension
that had been building between us since that kiss in my hospital bed.
I crossed my arms and stared at Zade expectantly, waiting to hear what he would say now, that he could no longer avoid it.
‘Well? Do you have anything to say for yourself?”
Zade was quiet for a long moment, his fingers drumming against the desk surface. Finally, he sighed. “I’m sorry,”
That’s it? An apology? I felt something cold and sharp settle in my chest. “Sorry for what, exactly? For kissing me? For making me think there might actually be something between us?”
“I’m not trying to hurt you,” Zade said quietly, not meeting my eyes. “It’s just… it’s wrong for me to want something like this. Especially when I don’t deserve it.”
