Chapter 236

Again, Riley’s attention drifted to the windows and ceiling, his body tensing as if preparing to flee. I watched him note the position of the door, the distance to the balcony, the height of the ceiling tiles. It was like watching a trapped animal calculating escape routes.
“She taught me how to be quiet,” he said finally. “And how to sit still. And how to not be trouble.”
“Those sound like very grown-up things to learn. Did you have time to play and be a kid?”
Riley looked genuinely confused by the question. “Play is for after you earn it. You have to do your lessons first and be good.”
Ollie made a frustrated sound. “That’s not how it works! Kids are supposed to play and have fun. You don’t have to earn being happy.”
“You don’t understand,” Riley said firmly. “You were always wanted, so you don’t know. Bad children have to work harder to be good
enough.”
Dr. Sloane was taking extensive notes now, and I could see the concern growing in her expression as she pieced together the extent of
Riley’s psychological conditioning.
“I think,” Dr. Sloane said after several more minutes of careful questioning, “it might be helpful if I spoke with the boys alone for a while. Sometimes children feel more comfortable sharing when adults aren’t in the room.”
I felt my stomach clench with anxiety. The idea of leaving Riley with a stranger, even a qualified professional, made every maternal
instinct I had scream in protest. “Are you sure that’s necessary?”
“I understand your reluctance,” Dr. Sloane said kindly, “but it’s a standard part of my assessment process. The boys might feel more free to express themselves without worrying about how their words affect the adults they care about.”
I looked at Riley, who was back to studying the balcony door with intense concentration. Leaving him felt wrong, but I had to trust
that this was what he needed.
“Alright,” I agreed reluctantly. “I’ll be right outside if you need anything.”
I kissed both boys on the forehead and made my way to the waiting area, where I found Lyn pacing nervously by the windows.
“How did it go?” he asked immediately, his eyes searching my face for clues.
I sank into one of the uncomfortable waiting room chairs, feeling emotionally drained. “Riley barely spoke, and when he did, it was to defend Sophia or talk about how he needs to ‘be good’ to earn basic things like playing. And the way he was scanning the room for exits…” I shook my head, trying to process everything I’d witnessed. “Ollie’s frustrated because he can see that Riley’s been hurt, but Riley
can’t or won’t acknowledge it.”

“Give it time, Lyn said gently, settling into the chair beside me. “These things take-
His phone rang, cutting off his words. He glanced at the screen and immediately answered. “Lynn?”
I could only hear Lyn’s side of the conversation, but his expression grew increasingly grave as he listened.
“What?” he said sharply. “When did this happen?”
There was a long pause as Lynn spoke on the other end.
Two guards dead?” Lyn continued, his voice dropping low as he added. “And the truck driver?”
My blood ran cold. Two dead guards and a missing truck sounded like the beginning of an attack.
“Is it Andy?” I asked quietly, but Lyn held up a hand to indicate he was still listening.
“Understood,” he said finally. “We’ll stay put until the security detail arrives.”
He ended the call and turned to me with grim eyes.
“What’s happening?” I demanded, worried. Was Andy finally making a move? What was going on?
“Security breach,” he said tersely. “Patrols found two dead guards at an abandoned section of the forest surrounding the city, and a dead man who was driving a truck that’s now missing. The truck was registered for children’s deliveries – ice cream, snacks, that sort of
thing.
“Andy,” I said immediately, my wolf stirring with protective instincts. “It has to be her.”
“Lynn doesn’t know for certain, but they’re not taking any chances. They’re sending security to the hospital as a precaution, but they can’t issue a full alert without knowing who’s responsible. If it’s not Andy, they don’t want to panic the entire city.”
I understood the logic, but it did nothing to calm the terror clawing at my chest. My boys were in that office, completely vulnerable, while something dangerous was potentially hunting them.
“How long until security gets here?” I asked.
“They should already be- his phone suddenly showed no signal. I grabbed my own phone and found the same thing no bars, no
network connection.
“What’s happening?” I started to ask, but my question was answered as every light in the hospital suddenly went out.
Emergency lighting kicked in a few seconds later, casting everything in an eerie red glow. Then I heard it – screaming from somewhere deeper in the building, followed by the metallic scent of blood hitting my sensitive nose.

“The boys,” I gasped, jumping to my feet and starting toward Dr. Sloane’s office.

I made it three steps before something large and snarling launched itself at me from the shadows near the elevator. I caught a glimpse of glowing eyes and bared fangs before my wolf took over, forcing my shift just in time to meet the attack with claws and teeth of
my own.
The creature – definitely not human, but not clearly any species I recognized – slammed into my wolf form with devastating force. We
crashed into the waiting room chairs, sending them flying as we rolled across the floor in a tangle of fur and claws and snapping jaws.
All I could think about was getting to Riley and Ollie, getting them somewhere safe where they would not be hurt by whoever was
after them, but first I had to survive whatever this thing was that was trying to tear my throat out.
The battle for my children’s lives had begun.
