I could see him withdrawing even as we spoke, pulling back into that guarded space where he’d learned to protect himself from

disappointment and rejection. The sight made panic claw at my throat. I felt like I was losing him again and I had no idea how to stop it.

“That’s not true,” I said, moving closer despite his obvious desire for distance. “You’re my mate. My chosen partner. The person I love

more than anyone else in this world.”

“Am I?” he asked, and the quiet devastation in his voice was worse than shouting would have been.

“Because Andy showed me something interesting while she had me. She showed me pack records, official documents from councils

and meetings. Do you know how many times my name appears in those records as your mate?”

I felt the blood drain from my face as I realized what he was getting at.

“Zero,” he continued, his voice gaining strength as he spoke. “In every official capacity, Lynn is listed as your Luna. Your chosen

partner. Your mate. I don’t exist in any meaningful way in the political structure of this pack.”

“Those are just formalities,” I protested weakly. “Paperwork. They don’t mean anything compared to what we have together.”

Lyn shook his head, moving past me back into the bedroom. I followed, watching as he began pulling clean clothes from his dresser

with sharp, angry movements.

“They mean everything,” he said without looking at me. “They mean that when push comes to shove, when difficult decisions need to be made, I’m expendable. They mean that my opinions, my needs, my very existence can be disregarded because I have no official

standing in your life.”

I wanted to argue, to tell him he was wrong, but the evidence of my own cowardice was overwhelming. How many times had I made decisions about our relationship based on what was politically expedient rather than what was right? How many times had I chosen the

easy path over the one that would have honored him as he deserved?

“I’m sorry,” I said, the words feeling inadequate but necessary. “You’re right. I’ve been a coward. I’ve hidden you away and told myself it was for your protection when really it was because I was too weak to face the consequences of claiming you publicly.”

Lyn paused in his dressing, his shoulders tense with emotion he was trying to contain.

“I know,” he said quietly. “I’ve known for years. But hearing Andy lay it out so clinically, seeing the evidence of how thoroughly I’ve been erased from your public life… it made something crystal clear for me.”

“What’s that?” I asked, dreading the answer.

He turned to face me, and I saw in his eyes the kind of painful resolution that came from accepting hard truths.

“I can’t keep living like this,” he said simply. “I can’t keep pretending that scraps of private affection are enough to sustain a real relationship. I can’t keep watching Lynn stand where I should be standing and telling myself that it doesn’t matter.”

The panic that had been clawing at my chest exploded into full-blown terror. “What are you saying?”

“I’m saying that things have to change,” Lyn replied, his voice steady despite the pain I could see in his face. Really change, not just promises of eventual improvement. I need to know that I matter to you as more than a guilty secret you visit when no one else is

watching.”

I nodded frantically, relief flooding through me at the realization that he wasn’t leaving, just demanding better treatment.

“Yes,” I said immediately. “Whatever you need. Whatever changes you want to make, I’m ready.”

For the first time since I’d entered the room, Lyn’s expression softened slightly.

“I want to sleep in the same bedroom,” he said. “Not just when it’s convenient, not just when you need comfort after a difficult day. I

want us to share a space like actual partners do.”

The request was so reasonable, so basic, that shame burned hot in my chest as I realized how long I’d denied him even this simple

acknowledgment of our relationship.

“Of course,” I said. “We can start tonight if you want. I can move my things-”

“I don’t want your things moved,” Lyn interrupted. “I want our things. I want a space that belongs to both of us, not your room that

you’re graciously allowing me to inhabit.”

I nodded, understanding the distinction he was making. He didn’t want to be a guest in my life anymore – he wanted to be a partner

with equal standing and equal claim to the spaces we shared.

“We’ll find a new room,” I agreed. “Something bigger, something we can make ours together.”

Lyn studied my face for a long moment, searching for signs of sincerity or manipulation. Whatever he saw there must have reassured

him, because some of the tension left his shoulders.

“This isn’t going to be easy,” he warned me. “I’m not the same person I was before Andy took me. The things she showed me, the things she made me see about our relationship and about myself… I’m going to need time to process all of that.”

“I know,” I said, moving closer until I could reach out and touch his face gently. “I’m not going anywhere. We’ll figure it out together.”

He leaned into my touch for just a moment before pulling away.

“I hope so,” he said quietly. “Because I don’t think I can go back to the way things were before. I won’t.”

As I looked at my mate – really looked at him, seeing the strength and determination that Andy’s torture had only served to clarify

rather than break – I realized that the changes he was demanding weren’t just necessary for his wellbeing. They were necessary for mine

too.

It was time to stop being a coward. Time to claim him publicly, proudly, and permanently.

Time to be the mate he deserved, rather than the one I’d been.
