Chapter 304
LUMINA
A993
Through the observation window, I could see Riley and Lake talking quietly, their heads bent close together in that intimate way that
spoke of shared secrets and deep understanding.
Whatever Lake was saying was clearly distressing-his free hand kept coming up to wipe at his eyes, his shoulders shaking with what
looked like silent sobs.

Riley’s response was to pull him closer, maneuvering carefully around the medical equipment until Lake’s head was resting against his
shoulder.
The embrace looked awkward given Lake’s weakened state and the tubes still connecting him to various monitors, but neither of them
seemed to care about the discomfort.
“They’re really close,” Ollie observed, following my gaze through the window. “I’ve never seen Riley like that with anyone else. Not
even with us.”
The innocent observation cut deeper than any deliberate cruelty could have.
Ollie was right-Riley had never shown this level of emotional connection with his actual family. We got mechanical compliance, careful politeness, the bare minimum of engagement necessary to satisfy Dr. Sloane’s requirements for his recovery.
But this? This raw, unguarded intimacy? This was reserved exclusively for Lake.
“They’ve been through a lot together,” Xenois said quietly, and I could hear the same hurt in his voice that I was feeling. “Sometimes
trauma creates bonds that are hard for outsiders to understand.”
“Even when the outsiders are family?” Ollie asked, and the simple question carried so much wisdom that I had to blink back sudden
tears.
“Especially then,” I admitted, watching Riley stroke Lake’s hair with gentle care while murmuring something too quiet for us to hear through the glass. “Because family comes with expectations and obligations that friends don’t have. Riley doesn’t have to perform for Lake the way he feels he has to perform for us.”
Dr. Sloane had joined us at the window, her professional assessment of the scene evident in her thoughtful expression. “This bond between them could be incredibly healing for Riley,” she said.
“Or it could become another crutch that prevents him from developing healthier coping mechanisms. We’ll need to monitor how their relationship evolves, especially once you move to Silver Creek.”
The reminder of the upcoming relocation sent a spike of anxiety through me. Riley had been resistant to leaving from the moment we’d mentioned it, and I knew that resistance would only intensify now that Lake was awake.

Separating them felt cruel after everything they’d been through, but keeping them together meant bringing Lake into our home, our
pack, our family dynamic..
Bringing in the boy who’d tortured my ex boyfriend’s mate under my mate’s dead ex girlfriend sister’s orders.
“He’s coming with us,” I heard myself say, the decision crystallizing even as I spoke it. “To Silver Creek. Lake comes with us.”
Xenois turned to look at me sharply. “Lumina, are you sure that’s wise? Given everything that happened-”
“I’m sure it’s necessary,” I interrupted. “Riley won’t cooperate with the move otherwise, and we can’t leave him here alone while we establish ourselves in the new territory. Besides, Lake has nowhere else to go. We have no idea if he has biological family or if they want
nothing to do with him, and Andy’s dead. We’re all he has.”
“And Riley,” Ollie added thoughtfully. “Lake has Riley.”
“Yes,” I agreed, watching my son hold his friend while the boy cried against his shoulder. “He has Riley. Which means we have both of
them, whether we’re ready for that complication or not.”
Dr. Sloane made a note on her tablet.
“I’ll need to coordinate with mental health services in Silver Creek to ensure both boys have proper support once you relocate. Lake will need his own therapist, someone who can help him process his trauma and his guilt separately from Riley’s recovery.”
Guilt. The word hung in the air between us, an acknowledgment of what Lake had done even as we made plans to fold him into our family structure. He wasn’t innocent, wasn’t just another victim of Andy’s manipulation. He’d made choices, participated in acts that had
caused real harm to real people.
But he was also Riley’s anchor, the person who’d kept my son tethered to something resembling stability through weeks of medication and trauma processing. Rejecting Lake meant losing whatever fragile progress Riley had made, meant watching him retreat even further into the emotional numbness that the medication provided.
So we would bring him with us. We would integrate him into our pack, our home, our complicated family dynamics. And we would deal with the consequences as they came, because that’s what family did. Even when it hurt. Even when it was hard. Even when the person you were protecting had hurt people you loved.
I just hoped Lyn and Lynn would understand. I hoped Zade wouldn’t see this as a betrayal of his mate’s suffering. I hoped that somehow, impossibly, we could all find a way to move forward without tearing each other apart in the process.
Through the window, Lake had pulled back slightly from Riley’s embrace, and I could see him asking something. Riley’s response was immediate and emphatic, his head shaking firmly as he continued to hold Lake’s hand like a lifeline.
Whatever Lake had asked, Riley wasn’t agreeing to it. And based on the resigned acceptance that crossed Lake’s face, he wasn’t going
to push the issue.

They deserved better than what life had given them. They deserved safety and stability and the chance to recover without additional
complications.
Instead, they were getting us-a fractured family trying desperately to piece itself back together while carrying our own trauma and
grief. It would have to be enough. It had to be, because there were no other options left.
The door to Lake’s room opened, and Riley emerged with careful composure. His expression was neutral, that carefully controlled
mask he wore when dealing with family rather than with Lake.
“He wants to talk to you,” Riley said, looking directly at me. “Alone.”
