Chapter 306
“That was amazing,” Lake wheezed, wiping tears from his eyes. “Do another one.”
“Boys,” Lumina said sharply, her voice cutting through their entertainment. “That’s enough.”

But my mind was racing, trying to understand what I’d just witnessed. Riley had been at least fifty feet away from that car, with the
windows closed and the engine running. There was no way normal enhanced hearing, even werewolf hearing, could have picked up a
conversation at that distance with such clarity and detail.
“Riley,” I said carefully, catching his eyes in the rearview mirror. “How did you hear that?”
My son’s expression shuttered immediately, all the animation draining from his face as he realized he’d revealed something he hadn’t
meant to. “I just… I have good hearing.”
“Not that good,” I pressed. “No werewolf has hearing that precise from that distance. Especially not with all the ambient noise from
traffic.”
Lake had gone very still beside Riley, and I saw understanding dawn on his face. This wasn’t something Riley had shared with us before. This was another secret, another ability that Andy or Sophia had either given him or helped him develop, another piece of our son
that we didn’t know.
“It’s not a big deal,” Riley said, his tone going flat in that way that meant he was shutting down. “Just something I can do sometimes.”
“Since when?” Lumina asked, turning in her seat to look at him properly.
“Has this always been one of your abilities?”
Riley shrugged, his gaze sliding away from both of us. “I don’t know. Andy said I was special. That I could do things other werewolves couldn’t, like almost like a werewitch like Lake. I like it.”
The casual way he referenced Andy, the automatic trust he still placed in her assessment of his abilities, sent fresh pain lancing
through my chest.
She’d spent five years alongside Sophia convincing him he was extraordinary, that his powers made him different from everyone else.
And we were supposed to what? Convince him otherwise?
We pulled through the gates of Zade’s mansion, the familiar sight of the sprawling estate doing nothing to settle my nerves.
This was supposed to be temporary housing while we prepared for the move to Silver Creek, but it felt more like a holding pattern-a liminal space where we were all waiting for the next crisis to hit.
“We’re here,” I announced unnecessarily, pulling into the circular drive.
Riley was already moving, helping Lake out of the SUV with careful attention.

Chapter 306
Lumina and I lingered by the car, neither of us quite ready to follow them inside.
“He can hear things he shouldn’t be able to hear,” she said quietly. “What else can he do that we don’t know about?”
I had no answer for her. Every day revealed new layers to the person Andy had shaped our son into, new abilities and trauma
responses that we had no framework for understanding.
We were supposed to be his parents, supposed to know him better than anyone.
Instead, we were strangers fumbling in the dark, trying to piece together a puzzle when we didn’t even know how many pieces were
missing.
