Chapter 322
XENOIS
“Whatever happens,” I said, addressing everyone in the car, “we stay together. We’re a family, and families stand united.”
Z (92)
“Even if that family is complicated and dysfunctional and held together by trauma?” Lake asked, and I couldn’t tell if he was being
serious or sarcastic.
“Especially then,” I confirmed.
I opened the car door and stepped out into the late morning sun, feeling the weight of dozens of eyes on me. Lumina appeared at my side immediately, and together we faced our pack. Behind us, I heard the back doors opening as the boys climbed out.
Marcus was the first to approach, his expression carefully neutral. “Alpha. Luna. Welcome home.”
The formal greeting, lacking any warmth or familiarity, told me everything I needed to know about how the pack viewed our return. We weren’t being welcomed back-we were being assessed, judged, evaluated for whether we were still worthy of our positions.
“Marcus,” I said, matching his formal tone. “Thank you for holding things together in our absence.”
“It’s what a gamma is for,” he replied, but there was an edge to his words.
“Though two months is a long time to hold things together when the alpha and luna provide minimal communication.”
The rebuke was mild but pointed. He was right-I should have been better about staying in contact, about keeping the pack informed. But between Riley’s situation and Lake’s coma and my own spiraling anxiety, communication with Silver Creek had fallen to the bottom of
my priority list.
“There were extenuating circumstances,” Lumina said, her voice carrying that luna authority that demanded respect. “Circumstances we’ll explain to the pack council. But not here, not now.”
One of the elders-Margaret, who’d been serving as pack elder since before I became alpha-stepped forward. Her gaze swept over our group, lingering on Riley with sharp assessment, then moving to Lake with obvious suspicion.
“Who is this?” she asked, nodding toward Lake. “This child is not pack. Why have you brought a stranger into our territory?”
“This is Lake,” I said, keeping my voice steady. “He’s under our protection and will be staying with us indefinitely.”
“A werewitch,” Margaret said, and I realized she’d already assessed his magical signature. “A powerful one, from the feel of him. And you’ve brought him here without consulting the council, without vetting him through proper channels?”
“I’ve brought him here because he’s important to Riley,” I said firmly. “And because he needs our protection. That’s sufficient reason.”

Chapter 322
“Is it?” another elder challenged. “Is your son’s preference for companionship more important than pack security? We know nothing
about this boy, nothing about his background or his intentions.”
92
“His intentions are to stay with Riley,” I said, feeling my alpha authority rising to match the challenge. “That’s all you need to know.”
The standoff stretched, tension crackling through the courtyard. I could feel the pack’s attention focused on this moment, on whether
I would back down or hold firm. This was about more than just Lake-it was about whether I still had the strength to lead, whether my
time away had weakened me too much to maintain authority.
“The council will meet this evening,” Margaret said finally, breaking the stalemate. “All four of you will attend. We have many
questions that require answers.”
It wasn’t capitulation, but it wasn’t open rebellion either. I’d take it.
“Agreed,” I said. “This evening.”
The crowd began to disperse, pack members drifting away now that the immediate drama was over. But I could feel their curiosity, their concern, their doubt. We’d bought ourselves a few hours, but tonight’s council meeting would determine our future.
Marcus lingered after the others had left, his expression softening slightly. “You look like hell,” he said bluntly. “Both of you.”
“Feel like it too,” I admitted.
“The boys?” he asked, glancing toward where Riley, Lake, and Ollie stood in a tight cluster near the SUV.
“It’s complicated,” I said, which was the understatement of the century.
“Everything with you is complicated lately,” Marcus replied, but there was affection underneath the exasperation. “Come on. Let’s get you all inside and settled before the inquisition begins.”
As we walked toward the pack house-my home, though it felt foreign after two months away-I felt Lumina’s hand find mine again. The boys followed behind us, Ollie still chattering nervously about pack politics and promising to show Lake around once they were
settled.
I had no idea what we were going to face tonight at the council meeting. No idea how to explain everything that had happened, everything we’d learned, everything that still remained unknown. But looking at my fractured, complicated, traumatized family walking beside me, I knew one thing with absolute certainty.
Whatever came next, we’d face it together.
And maybe, just maybe, that would be enough.
