Chapter 329

“Lumina, reach out to Lynn,” I continued. “See if she has any contacts who specialize in light magic or shadow manipulation. We need
someone who can help us counter these things.”
“What about Lyn?” Ollie asked. “He helped Mom before, right? Could he help again?”
“Maybe,” I said, though the thought of asking Zade for more help made me uncomfortable. We’d already imposed on his hospitality for
two months. Asking him to send Lyn to help defend our territory felt like admitting we couldn’t handle our own problems.
“Let’s keep that as a backup option.”
“And what are you going to do?” Lumina asked.
“I’m going to call an emergency pack meeting,” I said. “We need to put everyone on high alert. Increase patrols, establish watch
rotations, make sure no one is traveling alone. If there’s a nightwalker in Silver Creek, the whole pack needs to know.”
“Won’t that cause panic?” Lake asked.
“Probably,” I admitted. “But panic is better than being unprepared. These are my people, my responsibility. I won’t keep them in the
dark about a threat just because it’s scary.”
Lumina squeezed my hand, offering silent support. She knew this wasn’t going to be easy-gathering the pack, explaining the danger,
admitting that we’d brought this threat to Silver Creek by rescuing Riley and Lake. There would be anger, fear, maybe even calls to exile
the boys to protect the rest of the pack.
But I wouldn’t let that happen. Couldn’t let that happen. Riley and Lake were pack now, whether the elders liked it or not. And pack
meant protection, meant loyalty, meant standing together against threats instead of sacrificing the vulnerable to save ourselves.
“Boys,” I said, addressing all three of them. “I need you to understand something. What’s coming is going to be dangerous. But you’re
not alone. You have me, you have your mother, you have this entire pack behind you. No one is taking you anywhere. No one is hurting
you. Not while I’m alpha.”
Riley’s blank expression cracked slightly, showing a flicker of something that might have been gratitude or fear or hope. Lake just
nodded, like he’d heard promises like this before and didn’t quite believe them but wanted to.
Ollie, my sweet, brave, overlooked son, straightened his shoulders. “I’ll help too,” he declared. “I might be little, but I can still fight.”
“No fighting,” Lumina said quickly.
“Not for you. Not yet. You’re five years old, Ollie. Your job is to stay safe and let the adults handle the dangerous stuff.”

“That’s not fair,” Ollie protested. “Riley’s five too, and he’s in danger! And he fights scarily well, why can’t I fight?”
“Probably cry when you see one.” Riley muttered amused as Lake bit back a chuckle.
“Riley is in danger because of circumstances beyond his control,” I said gently.”
Not because he chose to be. Your job, your most important job, is to be a kid. Let us worry about the nightwalkers and strike teams
and all the scary stuff. Okay?”

Ollie looked like he wanted to argue, but something in my expression must have convinced him it wasn’t worth it. He slumped back
against the couch, muttering about how being little meant everyone treated you like you were useless.
I caught Riley and Lake exchanging glances, something passing between them that I couldn’t quite read.
They’d both been forced to grow up too fast, to handle horrors no child should face. I could see in their eyes that they understood the
weight Ollie was chafing against-the burden of being seen as too young, too innocent, too helpless to contribute.
But there was also relief there. Relief that at least Ollie could be protected, could be kept safe, could maintain some semblance of
childhood even while their own innocence had been stolen.
“Alright,” I said, standing and injecting false energy into my voice.
“Everyone has assignments. Let’s get to work. The faster we prepare, the better our chances when-if-they come for us.”
The boys dispersed to work on their task, Ollie reluctantly following Riley and Lake to help them document what they knew. Lumina pulled out her phone to contact Lynn, already scrolling through her contacts for anyone who might have information on light magic
practitioners.
I stood in the empty living room for a moment, feeling the weight of responsibility pressing down on my shoulders. An alpha was supposed to protect his pack, supposed to keep everyone safe, supposed to make the hard decisions that ensured survival.
But how was I supposed to protect against an enemy I couldn’t see? How was I supposed to keep my children safe when the threat
could be standing right beside them and no one would know until it was too late?
I didn’t have answers. But I had two weeks to find them.
Two weeks to turn Silver Creek into a fortress that could withstand an invasion by enhanced supernaturals and shadow-walking
assassins.
Two weeks to become the alpha my family needed me to be.
It would have to be enough.
Because failure wasn’t an option. Not when my children’s lives hung in the balance.

I pulled out my phone and started making calls, reaching out to the pack’s military leaders, our best fighters, anyone with tactical experience. If we were going to war-and it was starting to look like we were-then we’d damn well be prepared.
The nightwalkers had made a mistake targeting Silver Creek. They’d forgotten one crucial fact about werewolves.
We might not be able to see in the dark.
But we knew how to fight anyway.
