Chapter 34
XENOIS

Ollie was watching us with wide, frightened eyes, and I realized we were doing exactly what we’d promised ourselves we wouldn’t do fighting in front of him.
“Ollie, go get dressed,” I said, trying to control my anger, reducing my tone as I spoke gently to him.
“We’ll continue this conversation later.”
He scrambled off his chair and ran toward the stairs, leaving Lumina and me alone in the kitchen with the tension that had been
building up since yesterday.
“You can’t seriously be considering letting that woman near our son,” she said, her voice sounding a bit shaky from emotion.
“That woman has a name. Sophia. And she’s an old friend who’s trying to reconnect with people from her past. The fact that you can’t see that, the fact that you immediately assume the worst about everyone, is exactly the problem.”
“The problem is that you’re so blinded by whatever spell she’s cast on you that you can’t see what’s right in front of your face!”
I stared at her, this woman who was supposed to be my partner in raising our son, and I didn’t recognize her anymore. It was almost as if she had changed and I had no Idea who this woman was.
When had she become so paranoid, so angry, so quick to lash out at anyone who came near our family?
‘Here’s what’s going to happen,” I said, my voice sounding calm despite the anger that I was feeling inside.
“Riley is coming over for a playdate this afternoon. Ollie needs friends, he needs normal socialization, and he needs to see that the world isn’t full of monsters waiting to hurt him.”
“Xenois, please-”
“I’m not finished.” I stepped closer to her, letting just a hint of my alpha authority leak into my voice.
“You’re going to be civil to Sophia when she arrives. You’re going to let the boys play together like normal children. And you’re going to stop filling Ollie’s head with your fears and paranola.”
Her face went white. “And if I refuse?”
“Then maybe it’s time we had a serious conversation about what kind of environment is good for Ollie’s growing up.”
The threat hung in the air between us, unspoken but perfectly clear. I watched as I saw her realize what I had meant by my words and

horror showed across her face.
“You wouldn’t,” she whispered, shaking her head slowly.
“I don’t want to. But I will if I have to. Our son’s wellbeing comes first, Lumina. Always.”

She stood there for a long moment, her hands clenched into fists at her sides,as she seemed to be having this kind of internal
conversation.
Finally, she spoke, her voice controlled as she spoke.
“Fine. But if we’re doing this, it happens here. In this house. Where I can… where we can both supervise.”
–
It wasn’t Ideal I’d hoped to get Ollie out of the house, away from whatever toxic environment Lumina had been creating for our son- but it was a compromise I could live with for now. Ollie also needed a familiar place for his first meeting with Riley.
“Agreed. I’ll call Sophia and let her know.”
She nodded her head, then turned and walked toward the stairs without another word.
I pulled out my phone and dialed Sophia’s number, trying to ignore the guilt that was building up in my chest. I’d just threatened my wife, the mother of my child, with taking away her son.
this..
But what choice did I have? Ollie’s mysterious injuries, his increasing withdrawal, his irrational fears, something had to change in all
“Xenois?” Sophia answered on the first ring.
“Hey. The playdate is a go for this afternoon. Would two o’clock work for you?”
“That’s perfect. Should I bring anything? Snacks for the boys, maybe?”
