Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 345

Chapter 345

LUMINA

91

By the time all three were dressed and their backpacks were packed with notebooks, pencils, and lunch boxes, it was already 7:45. We

had fifteen minutes to get breakfast into them and make the drive to school.

Breakfast was a quick affair-cereal and fruit, juice for the boys and coffee for Xenois and me. We sat around the kitchen table,

discussing plans for the day. Ollie was practically vibrating with excitement about his superhero presentation. Riley and Lake were

quieter, clearly nervous about their first official day of school.

“You’re going to do great,” I assured them. “Mrs. Henderson is a wonderful teacher. Very kind and patient.”

“What if the other kids don’t like us?” Lake asked quietly.

“They will,” Ollie declared with absolute certainty. “Because you’re awesome and you know cool stuff about portals and the future.

Everyone’s going to want to be your friend.”

Riley looked skeptical, but Lake seemed to take some comfort from Ollie’s confidence. They finished eating quickly, and we moved into the final preparations-teeth brushed again, faces wiped clean, backpacks double-checked for forgotten items.

“Lunch boxes,” Xenois said, pulling three insulated bags from the refrigerator. We’d packed them last night-sandwiches, fruit, cookies,

juice boxes. Simple but nutritious.

“Do we really have to go?” Lake asked as we headed for the garage. “Can’t we just… learn things here?”

“School is important,” I said gently. “Not just for learning but for socializing. For making friends and being part of a community.”

“Besides,” Xenois added, “if you stay home, you’ll just worry about nightwalkers and attacks all day. Better to be distracted.”

That seemed to resonate. Riley nodded slowly, and Lake stopped dragging his feet.

We piled into the SUV-Xenois driving, me in the passenger seat, three boys strapped into their booster seats in the back. Both Xenois and I were already dressed for work; we’d need to head straight to the pack house after drop-off for yet another emergency planning

session.

The drive to school was short-only about ten minutes through the pack territory. Ollie kept up a running commentary the entire way, pointing out landmarks and telling Riley and Lake about various school traditions. The other two listened with varying degrees of attention, Lake looking increasingly nervous as we got closer.

We pulled into the drop-off line at exactly 8:14. Right on time.

“Okay,” I said, turning in my seat to look at all three boys. “Remember, if anything feels wrong-if you’re uncomfortable or scared or something seems off-tell Mrs. Henderson immediately. And if you can’t find her, go to the office. They know to call us right away.”

We’d briefed the school staff extensively about Riley and Lake’s situation. Not the full truth-we couldn’t exactly tell civilians about secret facilities and enhanced children-but enough to ensure they’d be protected. Extra security protocols, restricted visitor access,

immediate parent notification for any irregularities.

“We know, Mom,” Ollie said, rolling his eyes with all the exasperation of a five-year-old who’d heard the safety lecture a million times.

Riley and Lake nodded more seriously, clearly understanding the real threat underlying my concerns.

“Have a good day,” Xenois said warmly. “We’ll pick you up at three.”

We got out to help them with their backpacks, walking them to the front entrance where Mrs. Henderson was waiting to greet her students. She was a middle-aged wolf with kind eyes and a warm smile, exactly the sort of teacher I’d wanted for the boys.

“Good morning, Ollie!” she called cheerfully. Then, turning to Riley and Lake, “And you must be our new students. Welcome! I’m so

excited to have you in class.”

Lake managed a small smile. Riley just nodded politely.

“They’re a little nervous,” I said quietly to Mrs. Henderson.

“Perfectly natural,” she assured me. “We’ll take good care of them. I’ve planned some ice-breaker activities for this morning to help

everyone get acquainted.”

Ollie grabbed Lake’s hand, already pulling him toward the classroom. “Come on! I’ll show you where we sit! And the reading corner!

And the science table!”

Riley followed more slowly, looking back at us once with an expression I couldn’t quite read. Then he straightened his shoulders and walked through the door, disappearing into the classroom.

Xenois and I stood there for a moment, watching through the window as Mrs. Henderson welcomed the class and the boys found their seats. Ollie was already talking to his neighbors, gesturing animatedly. Lake was beside him, looking overwhelmed but not panicked. Riley sat ramrod straight, observing everything with those too-aware eyes.

“They’ll be okay,” Xenois said, though I wasn’t sure if he was trying to convince me or himself.

“They will,” I agreed. “Because they’re ours, and we’re protecting them. No matter what comes.”

He took my hand, squeezing gently. “Together.”

“Together,” I confirmed.

We walked back to the SUV, both of us acutely aware that we’d just left our children in a public space where they could potentially be vulnerable. But we couldn’t keep them locked in the house forever. They deserved normalcy, deserved education and friendship and all the things childhood should include.

We just had to make sure the threats stalking them never got close enough to shatter that normalcy.

As Xenois started the engine and pulled out of the school parking lot, heading toward the pack house and whatever crisis awaited us

there, I found myself thinking about this morning. About the intimacy we’d shared, the connection we’d rebuilt, however tentatively.

My marriage wasn’t fixed. Trust took time to rebuild, and we had a long way to go before we were truly whole again. But this morning

had been a start. A reminder that beneath all the hurt and betrayal and complications, there was still love. Still a foundation worth

fighting for.

Just like our boys deserved protection and normalcy, my marriage deserved a second chance.

I was willing to give it that chance. Willing to work through the hard stuff, to forgive the unforgivable, to trust again despite every

reason not to.

Because in the end, family-chosen or blood-was worth fighting for.

And we had so much worth fighting for.
