Chapter 373

ZADE

ULUI Call

“Was any of that true?”

“Most of it,” I admitted. The council chambers part was embellished. We only did that once.”

Rivers actually laughed then, the sound bright and genuine. “You’re in ane. You know that, right? You just traumatized an elder with explicit details of your sex life.”

“He was being a homophobic asshole,” I said defensively. “I didn’t come there for that initially, but he was being such a pain in my ass that I figured turnabout was fair play. If he wants to make my relationship with Lyn a focal point of his bigotry, then he can deal with the reality of

it.”

“I’m not disagreeing,” Rivers said, still grinning. “I’m just saying that story is going to spread through the elder network like wildfire, and you’re going to have a reputation.”

“Good,” I said. “Let them all know that I’m not going to pretend or hide or apologize. Lyn is my mate. I love him. Anyone who has a problem with that can take it up with me directly instead of skulking around spreading rumors and coordinating murder attempts.”

We made our way through the secure wing and back into the main pack house, heading toward the hospital wing where Lyn spent most of his time when he wasn’t handling Luna duties. Despite everything else on his plate-the political challenges, the security concerns, the constant scrutiny-he’d insisted on continuing his work as a healer. Said it kept him grounded, reminded him that pack leadership was about serving people, not just managing crises.

I loved that about him. The way he could balance power and humility authority and compassion. The way he made “Luna” mean something beyond ceremonial duties and social obligations.

As we approached the hospital wing, I could hear voices-Lyn’s smooth tenor and Lynn’s slightly deeper alto, engaged in conversation that carried the particular cadence of siblings who’d known each other their entire lives. I slowed, some instinct making me pause before announcing our presence.

-so come on, give me details,” Lynn was

saying, her voice bright with mischief.

“Where’s the most interesting place you two have done it? And more importantly, how good is he in bed? Because I spent months pretending to be his mate, and I need to know if I missed out on anything

I felt Rivers stiffen beside me, both of us now very deliberately not moving, not breathing, trying to become invisible so we could hear the

rest of this conversation.

“Lynn,” Lyn said, his voice carrying embarrassment and something that might have been laughter. “I feel uncomfortable talking about this with you. You were acknowledged as my mate for months-it’s weird.”

“That was just to hurt people up,” Lynn protested. “We showed up together, shared a room for appearances, but there was nothing between us. Hell, half the time I tried not to smother Zade in his sleep for being such a homophobic asshole back then and treating you like you were

invisible.”

*Lynn, that’s treason,” Lyn hissed, though I could hear the affection underneath the warning. “You can’t talk about wanting to murder the

alpha.”

“Please, like you’re going to let anything happen to me,” Lynn said dis hissively. “I’m your twin sister. I’m protected by Luna privilege now, even if we’re keeping that quiet.”

There was a pause, and I could imagine Lyn’s exasperated expression, he way he probably rolled his eyes at his sister’s complete lack of self-preservation instincts.

“But seriously,” Lynn continued, “is there going to be a baby soon? Because the pack is already gossiping, and it would be the ultimate statement a male Luna producing an heir.”

“Don’t talk about things like that,” Lyn said quickly, his discomfort ob lous. “It’s not… it’s complicated.”

“Werewitches often give birth,” Lynn pointed out. “Male ones, I mean. It’s rare, but it happens. And you’re powerful enough that I’d bet my workshop you’re fertile.”

“Rarely,” Lyn emphasized. “And Zade doesn’t know that. About the male pregnancy thing. We haven’t… I haven’t told him that’s even a possibility.”

I felt like I’d been punched in the chest. Male werewitches could get pregnant? How did I not know that? How had that never come up in any conversation about our future or our relationship or-

“You haven’t told him?” Lynn’s voice carried disbelief. “Lyn, you’ve been mates for months. How has that conversation not happened?”

“Because it’s terrifying!” Lyn said, his voice rising slightly. “What if he doesn’t want that? What if he’s only okay with having a male mate because he assumes we’ll never have biological children? What if knowing could get pregnant changes how he sees me, makes him think I’m even more of an aberration?

“Or,” Lynn said gently, “what if he’s thrilled at the possibility? What if he loves you enough that the idea of having children with you- regardless of the biological mechanics-is something he wants?”

“I don’t know,” Lyn said quietly. “And I’m not ready to find out. Not yet. Not when everything is already so complicated and dangerous and

I knocked on the door, loud enough to be clearly heard, giving them time to shift gears before I entered. When I pushed the door open, both twins had scrambled into positions that suggested they’d been doing something medically important rather than having deeply personal

conversations.

Lyn was suddenly very interested in some patient charts, his posture rigid with false concentration. Lynn was organizing medical supplies with exaggerated focus, not meeting my eyes.

“Hey,” I said, pretending I hadn’t just overheard every word of their conversation.

“Rivers and I finished our meeting with Simon. Thought I’d come check in, see how things are going here.”

“Fine,” Lyn said too quickly. “Everything’s fine. Just catching up on patient records and inventory.”

“Right,” Lynn agreed. “Inventory. Very important. Nothing else happening. Just boring medical stuff.”

Rivers was making a strangled sound behind me that might have been a cough or might have been suppressed laughter at their terrible acting. I shot him a warning look that said very clearly that if he ruined my game right now, I was demoting him to omega status.
