Chapter 38
‘Where do you want it? Somewhere hidden would be best.”
“His shoulder blade. Under his shirt.”
“Perfect. Ollie, I need you to lift up your shirt for just a moment.”
He looked at me uncertainly, but complied with the order, taking a deep breath.
Carol placed her finger against his left shoulder blade and began tracing a small yet unique pattern. As she worked, she whispered words in a language I didn’t recognize, making it seem more surreal as I felt the air tensing around us.
Ollie shivered slightly, whether from the cold or the magic. I wasn’t certain. “It feels warm.”
“That’s normal,” Carol assured him with a smile. “Just a few more seconds.”
The paste seemed to absorb into his skin, leaving behind what looked like a small, dark freckle about the size of a dime.
But even as I watched, I could see it becoming like a dot which seemed normal to the human eyes and inconspicuous to anyone who
wanted to hurt him.
“All done,” Carol said, packing her supplies back into the bag as she nodded her head. “You can put your shirt down now.”
“That’s it?” Ollie asked, reaching back to touch the spot where she’d applied the protection ward.
“That’s it. And remember, this is our little secret, okay? Sometimes adults like to keep certain things private.”
He nodded solemnly, the kind of nod that he did when he realized that he had to keep quiet about some important things.
“Can I go back to reading now?”
“Of course, sweetheart,” I said, kissing his forehead as I beamed at him. “Carol and I are just going to go downstairs and catch up.”
Once we were back in the living room, Carol turned to me with a serious look on her face as she said.
“The ward is in place, and it should protect him from any future magical attacks. But you need to know this kind of attack won’t
stop.”
“What do you mean?”
‘I mean they’re going to try again, probably soon. And when they realize their magic isn’t working anymore, they might switch to
direct methods.”

Chapter 38
A chill ran down my spine hearing these words from her mouth.
“You think they’ll try to hurt him physically?”
“I think you need to be very careful about who you trust and who you allow around your son.
The kind of person who would use blood magic on a child…” She shook her head, bitterly as she added. “They’re not going to be
deterred by one setback.”
“I’ll be careful.”
Just as she was gathering her things to leave, I heard footsteps on the stairs. My heart started pounding when I realized that it was
Xenois who was coming out of his study.
“Carol, act natural,” I whispered urgently. “You’re just an old college friend.”
She nodded, putting on an act as Xenois appeared at the bottom of the stairs, looking tired and stressed.
“Oh, hi,” he said, noticing Carol for the first time. “I didn’t realize we had company.”
“Xenois, this is Carol Morrison,” I said, hoping my voice sounded casual.
“We were roommates in college. She was in the area and thought she’d stop by.”
“Nice to meet you,” Carol said, extending her hand with a warm smile as Xenois shook it gently. “Lumina’s told me so much about you
over the years.”
“Has she?” He was pleasant to her but still had a wary look in his eyes.
He was suspicious of everyone lately, especially anyone connected to me,
‘Well, I should get going,” Carol said, checking her watch.
“I have a long drive ahead of me. Lumina, it was wonderful catching up with you.”
“Let me walk you to your car,” I said, desperate to get her out of the house before Xenois could ask too many questions.
