Chapter 396

“It’s not medical,” I said, my voice coming out rougher than intended. It’s political. And potentially catastrophic.”
I quickly summarized what Shawn had told me-the ambush, the kidnapping of Samuel and Silvia, the organized coalition of supernatural beings who’d specifically targeted the Blackwoods while leaving a werewith teenager alive.
Zade’s expression darkened with every word, his alpha authority radiating outward in a way that made the air feel heavy and charged.
Samuel and Silvia Blackwood have been taken,” he said slowly, like testing the words to see if they made sense. “Xenois’s parents. The former alpha and luna of Silver Creek. The people who helped establish the entire current supernatural power structure in this region.”
“Yes, I confirmed.
“By a coalition that includes werewitches, nightwalkers, fae, and halfbipods. Working together. Coordinated.”
“Yes.”
“Fuck.”
It was possibly the most eloquent summary of our situation I could have asked for.
Zade was already moving, pulling out his phone and dialing with sharp, precise movements. “Rivers? I need an emergency council meeting. Right now. Yes, I know what time it is. I don’t care. Get everyone into the conference room in fifteen minutes or I’m coming to collect them personally.”
“e paused, listening, then his jaw tightened.
“Because Samuel and Silvia Blackwood have been kidnapped by what appears to be an organized supernatural coalition, and if we don’t move fast, this entire region is about to explode into open warfare. That ungent enough for you?”
Another pause.
‘Good. Fifteen minutes. And Rivers? Get Kyle on the line. I need vampires for a tracking mission, and I need them yesterday.”
He ended the call and immediately dialed again. This time, from the way his expression shifted into something grimmer, I knew he was calling Xenois.
‘Don’t- I started, then stopped. Because Zade was right. Xenois needed to know. Immediately.
“Xenois, Zade said when the call connected, his voice carrying the kind of controlled calm that suggested barely contained chaos underneath. “I need you to sit down. Right now. Because I’m about to tell you something that’s going to make you want to tear the world apart, and I need you to stay rational long enough to actually help me fix it.”
I couldn’t hear Xenois’s response, but I could see Zade’s face as he delivered the news. Could see the way his own fury and fear and protective instincts warred with the need to be strategic, to think clearly, not let emotion override effectiveness.
“Your parents were ambushed somewhere between Silver Creek and Monridge, Zade said bluntly. “They were traveling with a werewitch

teenager named Shawn-apparently they’d taken him in after the Shadow City incident. The attackers took your parents but left Shawn alive. He just contacted Lyn telepathically asking for help.”
The response on the other end must have been explosive, because Zad actually held the phone away from his ear for a moment.
“Yes, I’m sure,” he said firmly. “Yes, it’s credible. And yes, we’re already mobilizing. But Xenois, listen to me-whoever did this, whatever their goal, they’re organized and they’re coordinated. This wasn’t some random attack. This was planned, targeted, and executed by multiple supernatural factions working together.”
More response from Xenois, angry and rapid.
“I don’t know why yet,” Zade admitted. “But I’m going to find out. In the meantime, you need to secure your territory, protect your family, and prepare for the possibility that this is just the opening move in something much bigger.”
He listened for another moment, then nodded even though Xenois couldn’t see him.
“I’ll keep you updated. Every step. You have my word. But Xenois? Don’t do anything stupid. Don’t go charging off alone to mount a rescue. We do this smart, we do this coordinated, or we risk making everything worse.”
The call ended, and Zade immediately moved to the cabinet where he kept emergency supplies. He pulled out weapons, communication equipment, medical supplies-preparing for the kind of mission that could go very wrong very quickly.
“You’re going after Shawn first,” I said, understanding his strategy.
“Damn right I am,” Zade confirmed. “That kid is alone, scared, and the only witness we have to what happened. We get him safe, we get his full story, and then we figure out how to track down whoever took the Blackwoods.”
“I’m coming with you,” I said, already moving toward the door.
“Lyn-”
“Don’t,” I interrupted. “That boy reached out to me specifically. He trusted me enough to use abilities he barely understands to call for help. I’m not staying behind while you retrieve him.”
Zade studied me for a long moment, then nodded. “Fine. But you follow my orders out there, understand? This isn’t a hospital where you’re in charge. This is a tactical operation, and I need you to trust my judgmen.”
“I can do that,’ I agreed.
What I didn’t say what I carefully kept behind my mental shields so ade wouldn’t sense through the mate bond-was that I was also terrified. Not just for Shawn or for Samuel and Silvia, but for what this meant for the larger situation.
Because organized coalitions of supernatural beings didn’t just spontaneously form and execute coordinated kidnappings. This kind of operation required planning, resources, shared goals, and probably outside support.
Someone was organizing resistance to the changes Zade and Xenols wire implementing. Someone powerful enough and connected enough to unite traditionally hostile factions into a single force.
And if they’d taken Samuel and Silvia as their opening move, what would they do next?
But those were worries for later. Right now, we had a frightened teenager to rescue and parents to find.
