Chapter 406
XENOIS
I was in the middle of coordinating with Thorne about equipment needs when my phone rang. Zade’s name flashed on the screen, and I
answered immediately.
“What’s the update?” I asked.
“We have Shawn secured and he’s been debriefed,” Zade said. “But instead of driving another three hours to your territory, I was thinking we could use Lake’s portal abilities. Think he could handle opening a gateway for six people plus supplies?”
I glanced toward the living room where I could hear the kids setting up their makeshift command center. “Let me ask him.”
I found Lake arranging laptops and tablets on the coffee table with the careful precision of someone who needed everything to be perfect.
Riley was testing communication equipment while Ollie organized maps and reference materials.
“Lake,” I called. “Can you open a portal large enough for Zade’s team to come through? Six people plus equipment?”
Lake’s eyes lit up with the eager determination I’d come to recognize Where are they?”
I relayed the question to Zade, who provided coordinates and a description of their location. Lake listened intently, his brow furrowing in
concentration.
“I’ve never been there,” he said slowly. But if Alpha Zade can send me a clear photo of exactly where they are-like a panoramic view
showing the surroundings-I can use that as an anchor point.”
Within minutes, Zade had sent several high-resolution images of their position. Lake studied them carefully, then nodded.
“I can do it. Give me a minute to visualize properly.”
He moved to the center of the room, closing his eyes and extending his hands. I felt the air shimmer with magic-that distinctive sensation
of reality being folded and manipulated. A circle of light appeared on our foor, expanding outward until it formed a doorway about six feet in
diameter.
Through the opening, I could see Zade and his team standing in what looked like a rest stop parking lot. Zade grinned when he saw the
portal stabilize.
“Well, that’s convenient,” he said, then gestured to his team. “Everyone through. Carefully.”
Rivers came first, stepping through the portal with only slight hesitation. Then Marcus and Theo, both carrying equipment bags. Lynn followed, looking slightly pale from whatever healing work she’d been doing on Shawn.
Lyn came through next, and I could see the exhaustion etched into his face. Maintaining that mental connection with Shawn had clearly
drained him more than he wanted to admit.
Finally, Zade stepped through with Shawn beside him. The teenager looked terrified and overwhelmed, his eyes darting around my home
like he expected an attack at any moment.
Lake held the portal for a few seconds after they were all through, then let it collapse with a soft sound like air rushing to fill a vacuum.

He swayed slightly, and Riley was immediately at his side, steadying him.
“That was amazing,” Zade said, looking at Lake with genuine admiration. “Seriously, kid. If I’d known you could do that, I would’ve been using you as my personal transport express this whole time. Do you have any idea how much time I could save on territory visits?”
Despite everything, I felt a laugh bubble up. “Don’t give him ideas. He’s already going to be impossible after pulling off a long-distance
portal like that.”
Lake was grinning, clearly pleased with himself despite his obvious exhaustion. “I could totally do regular transport,” he said. “Though maybe not six people at once. That was harder than I expected.”
“You did great,” Riley assured him. “But maybe rest before you try it again.”
Lumina had appeared from the kitchen, her expression shifting from surprised to welcoming as she took in our suddenly crowded living room. “Well. I wasn’t expecting quite this many people, but welcome. Can get anyone anything? Water? Coffee? Food?”
“Coffee would be amazing,” Lynn said immediately. “And probably food for Shawn. He’s been running on adrenaline and whatever protein
bars we had in the vehicle.”
Shawn looked embarrassed by the attention, his hands shoved deep in his pockets as he tried to make himself smaller. I studied him for a moment-noting the torn clothes, the dirt and dried blood, the haunted look in his eyes that spoke of trauma too fresh to process.
“Shawn,” I said gently. “I’m glad you’re safe. And I need you to know that none of this is your fault.”
His eyes snapped to mine, wide and filled with guilt. “But I didn’t fight. I just stood there while they took your parents. I could have-
“You could have gotten yourself killed or captured, I interrupted firmly. “And then we’d have no intelligence about what happened. You did exactly the right thing by surviving and calling for help.”
“Alpha Xenois is right,” Zade added. “You’re the reason we have any actionable information at all. That makes you a hero, not a coward.”
Shawn looked like he desperately wanted to believe that but couldn’t quite let himself. I made a mental note to have him talk to someone about the trauma once this crisis was resolved. Kid had clearly been through hell.
Ollie had appeared in the doorway, his eyes lighting up when he saw the crowd. “Uncle Zade! And you must be Shawn. Daddy said you were
traveling with my grandparents.”
“I-yes,” Shawn stammered. “I’m sorry, I couldn’t stop them from-*
“Nobody’s blaming you,” Ollie said firmly, in a tone that was pure alpha authority despite his age. “You survived and got help. That’s what
