Chapter 414

ZADE

I stood in Xenois’s armory, running through weapons inventory with Rivers while trying not to think too hard about the fact that we were about to assault a fortified nightwalker nest to rescue two elderly werewolves from a revenge-motivated coalition.

Just another Tuesday in the absolute chaos that had become my life.

“Silver-jacketed rounds,” Rivers said, checking off items on his tablet. Blessed by three different religious traditions because apparently we’re not taking chances. UV grenades for nightwalkers. Iron shavings for the. Spelled binding ropes courtesy of Lynn. And enough medical

supplies to run a field hospital.”

“We’re either extremely prepared or wildly overcompensating,” I observed.

“Can’t it be both?” Rivers asked dryly.

I was about to respond when Lyn appeared in the doorway, looking slightly better than he had earlier but still obviously exhausted from

maintaining that mental connection with Shawn.

“You should be resting,” I said immediately, moving to his side. “Lynn said you needed at least twelve hours of sleep before doing any more

magic.

“Lynn worries too much,” Lyn said, though he leaned into me when I pulled him close. “I’m fine. Just came to check on preparations and

make sure you’re not doing anything stupidly heroic without me.”

“Would I do that?” I asked innocently.

“Yes,” he said flatly. “You absolutely would. You have a concerning tendency toward self-sacrifice when people you care about are in

danger.”

He wasn’t wrong. I’d thrown myself into dangerous situations more times than I could count when pack members needed protection. It was part of being alpha-putting yourself between your people and threats, even when the odds weren’t great.

But this was different. This wasn’t just about protecting pack members. This was about Xenois’s parents, about preventing a coalition of supernatural groups from using old grudges to destroy everything we were trying to build.

This was about proving that the new way-cooperation instead of genocide, justice instead of revenge-could actually work.

“I need you to promise me something,” Lyn said quietly, his hands fisting in my shirt. “Promise me you’ll come back. That you won’t do anything recklessly brave that gets you killed.”

‘I promise to be as careful as the situation allows,” I hedged.

“Zade-

‘I can’t promise nothing bad will happen, I interrupted gently. “You know that. Combat operations are unpredictable. But I can promise I’ll do everything possible to come home to you. Because I have a mate who’d be very angry if I died stupidly, and I’m terrified of disappointing you.”

That earned me a watery laugh. “You’re impossible.”

“You love me anyway,” I pointed out.

“Unfortunately,” he agreed, then kissed me hard enough to make my head spin.

When we finally broke apart, Rivers had politely moved to the other side of the armory and was very studiously examining ammunition that definitely didn’t need that much attention.

“Lyn,” I said seriously, “if things go wrong-if we need emergency extraction or magical support we didn’t anticipate-I need you to be rested enough to help. That’s not me trying to sideline you. That’s me making sure we have backup options if Plan A through C all fail.”

He studied my face for a long moment, then nodded reluctantly. “Okay But I’m monitoring communications. If it sounds like you’re in serious trouble, I’m opening a portal and coming in whether you want me to or not.”

“I’d expect nothing less,” I said. “Though hopefully it won’t come to that.”

Xenois entered the armory, his expression carrying the focused intensity of someone who’d shifted fully, into tactical mode. Gone was the worried son and protective father. In his place was Alpha Blackwood-commanding, strategic, and absolutely lethal when necessary.

“Status update,” he said without preamble..

“Weapons checked and distributed, Rivers reported. “Medical supplies packed. Communication equipment tested. Scouts have confirmed the location-there’s definitely activity at the old Silvercrest nest site. Hea signatures suggest at least twenty individuals inside.”

“Twenty against eight,” Xenois mused. Not great odds, but we’ve faced worse.”

“We have surprise on our side,” I added. “They’re not expecting us to move this quickly. Jerome probably thinks his video call bought him more time, that we’d spend days planning instead of hours.

“Plus we have intelligence about the interior layout from Marcus, Rivers continued. “The Silvercrest nest was mapped during the territorial

wars. Unless they’ve done major renovations, we know entry points, defensive positions, and potential bottlenecks.”

Xenois pulled up a holographic map on the tactical table, highlighting key features. “Main entrance here-definitely going to be guarded.

Secondary entrance on the east side-partially collapsed but still accessible. And there’s an old ventilation system that runs through the

mountain-narrow, probably uncomfortable, but it opens directly into the cell block where they’re likely holding my parents.”

“So we split into three teams,” I said, already seeing the strategy. “Team One creates a distraction at the main entrance, draws attention

and forces. Team Two goes through the secondary entrance to engage any defenders from behind. Team Three uses the ventilation system for

stealth extraction.”

“Exactly,” Xenois confirmed. I’ll lead Team Three-smaller, faster, focused entirely on getting Samuel and Silvia out. Zade, you take Team

One. Make a lot of noise, be obvious, give them something to focus on while we work.”

“I’m excellent at being obvious,” I agreed. “Rivers, Marcus, and Theo can back me up. We’ll make sure every nightwalker in that nest knows
