Chapter 420

SILVIA

“Going somewhere?” she asked mockingly.

“Attempting to,” I replied pleasantly.

“Though your hospitality has been so wonderful, it’s almost a shame to leave.”

“You’re not leaving,” she said flatly. “You’re going back to your cell, and this time we’re using chains you can’t pick and guards who aren’t idiots.”

“Improvement is always admirable,” I agreed. “Though I have to say, your security has been remarkably poor. Have you considered hiring a consultant? Someone who actually knows how to run a proper prison?”

I saw Samuel’s shoulders shake slightly-suppressed laughter at my inability to stop antagonizing our captors even when we were clearly at a disadvantage.

“Last chance,” Elena said. “Surrender now, or we hurt you badly enough that escape becomes impossible.”

I considered our options. We could surrender, go back to the cell, and wait for Xenois to rescue us. Practical, sensible,

likely to result in fewer injuries.

But also humiliating and completely contrary to everything we’d built our reputations on.

Or we could fight. Probably lose, definitely get hurt, but at least go down swinging instead of cowering.

“Did you really think you could just walk out?” Jerome demanded. “That we’d be so distracted by infighting that you’d slip

away unnoticed?”

“It was worth a try,” I said, trying to catch my breath while keeping my voice steady.

“Though I have to say, your security is quite poor. You might want to invest in better locks. And better guards who don’t

stand with their backs to cell doors.”

“Silvia,” Samuel murmured, “now might not be the best time for critique.”

“When is it ever not time for constructive feedback?” I countered.

Jerome made a sound that might have been a growl or might have been hysterical laughter. “You’re surrounded.

Outnumbered. Weakened by silver and wolfsbane. And you’re still making jokes. What is wrong with you?”

“Extensive therapy might be required to answer that question,” I admitted. “Samuel, do you think our health insurance covers psychological evaluation?”

“Probably not at our age,” he replied, matching my tone despite the obvious fear I could smell on him. “We’re considered high-risk patients.”

“That’s ageism,” I said indignantly. “We should file a complaint.”

“Assuming we survive the next five minutes,” Samuel agreed.

We were stalling, of course. Buying time for our wolf healing to kick in properly, for the wolfsbane to clear our systems enough that we could fight. And also buying time for Xenois, because despite our pride and our desperation to prove we weren’t helpless, we weren’t stupid enough to think we could actually defeat ten nightwalkers and their allies.

But we could make a damn good showing before we went down.

Jerome gestured, and the circle of enemies tightened around us. “You’re not walking out of here. You’re not being rescued. You’re going to die in this mountain, and your son is going to watch the video of your execution. That’s the only message that

matters.”

“Before we get to the dramatic death scene,” I said conversationally, “I have a confession to make.”

Samuel’s head snapped toward me. “Silvia, what are you doing?”

“Remember that jewelry set you gave me for our thirtieth anniversary?” I said, ignoring the nightwalkers and focusing entirely on my mate. “The one with the sapphires?”

“Yes?” Samuel said slowly, clearly confused about where I was going with this.

“You know how it mysteriously broke two years ago and I blamed Xenois for being careless?”

“Yes…”

“That was me,” I admitted. “I broke it trying to adjust the clasp. And I blamed Xenois because I was embarrassed.”

Samuel stared at me. “You blamed our son for your mistake? For two years?”

“In my defense, he never actually denied it,” I said. “He just accepted the blame silently like the wonderful child we

d.”

“Silvia, we need to talk about your definition of wonderful child’ if you think making him take the fall for your accident is appropriate parenting.”
