Chapter 426
LUMINA
“Lake,” I said, “can you open a portal to the Silvercrest nest? Based on the photos Xenois showed you?”
“Yes,” Lake said, his hands already beginning to glow. “But Lumina, I’ve never taken this many people through at once.
And I’ve definitely never taken them into active combat. If I mess up the coordinates, if I drop us in the wrong place-”
“You won’t mess up,” I said firmly. “Because Riley is going to guide you. Riley, can you see where we need to land? Where
we can arrive without immediately getting killed?”
Riley closed his eyes again, his face scrunching with concentration. After a moment, he opened them and pointed to a
specific spot in the air, as if he could see through dimensions to our destination.
“There,” he said. “That’s a storage room about fifty feet from where the main fighting is happening. It’s empty right now,
and it gives us access to multiple corridors. We can approach from an angle Jerome’s not expecting.”
“Perfect,” I said, then looked at everyone assembled. “Last chance to change your minds. If you’re not absolutely sure
about this, speak now. I won’t judge anyone who wants to stay behind where it’s safe.”
Nobody moved.
“Alright then,” I said, feeling my wolf rise to the surface, lending me strength and confidence. “Let’s go save our family.”
Lake opened the portal, the familiar shimmer of displaced reality forming in the center of the living room. Through it, I
could see stone walls and dim lighting-the storage room Riley had indicated.
“Everyone through,” I commanded. “Quickly and quietly. And remember-we’re not here to be heroes. We’re here to shift
the odds. To be the variable that changes 0.1 percent into something survivable.”
Lyn went first, his confidence helping to settle everyone else’s nerves. Then Riley, then Ollie, then Shawn who paused just
before stepping through.
“Thank you,” he said quietly. “For letting me help. For letting me do something instead of just sitting there feeling guilty.”
“We take care of our own,” I said simply. “Now go. We don’t have much time.”
Shawn stepped through. Lake looked at me, waiting for my signal.
“After you,” I said.

“Together,” he corrected, and held out his hand.
I took it, and we stepped through the portal together.
The world shifted, reality folding around us, and then we were there. In the Silvercrest nest. In the middle of active combat. With our family fighting for their lives somewhere nearby.
The portal closed behind us, cutting off our escape route until Lake could open another.
No turning back now.
“Riley,” I whispered, which way?”
He pointed down a corridor to our left. “That way. But there are guards. Three nightwalkers. We need to take them out silently or we’ll alert everyone to our presence.”
I’ve got it, Shawn said, his hands already beginning to glow with plasma energy. “I can vaporize them before they make a sound.”
“Do it,” I commanded.
We moved as quietly as we could down the corridor, following Riley’s guidance. Ahead, I could see three figures standing guard at an intersection, their attention focused away from us.
Shawn raised his hands, took careful aim, and fired.
Three bursts of superheated plasma, so quick they were almost simultaneous. The guards dropped without a sound, their bodies already beginning to disintegrate.
“Clear, Shawn whispered.
We kept moving, deeper into the nest, closer to wherever our family was fighting. With each step, I could hear the sounds of combat growing louder-shouts, crashes, the distinctive crack of gunfire.
“We’re close,” Riley said. “Just around this next corner. But Lumina-”
“What?”
“Grandma and Grandpa aren’t with Dad’s team,” he said, his voice urgent. “They escaped on their own. They’re in another part of the nest, surrounded, about to be killed. We need to split up.”
My heart clenched. Split up? That violated every tactical principle I’d ever learned.

But Riley’s precognition hadn’t steered us wrong yet.
“Where?” I asked.
