Chapter 426

LUMINA

“Lake,” I said, “can you open a portal to the Silvercrest nest? Based on the photos Xenois showed you?”

“Yes,” Lake said, his hands already beginning to glow. “But Lumina, I’ve never taken this many people through at once.

And I’ve definitely never taken them into active combat. If I mess up the coordinates, if I drop us in the wrong place-”

“You won’t mess up,” I said firmly. “Because Riley is going to guide you. Riley, can you see where we need to land? Where

we can arrive without immediately getting killed?”

Riley closed his eyes again, his face scrunching with concentration. After a moment, he opened them and pointed to a

specific spot in the air, as if he could see through dimensions to our destination.

“There,” he said. “That’s a storage room about fifty feet from where the main fighting is happening. It’s empty right now,

and it gives us access to multiple corridors. We can approach from an angle Jerome’s not expecting.”

“Perfect,” I said, then looked at everyone assembled. “Last chance to change your minds. If you’re not absolutely sure

about this, speak now. I won’t judge anyone who wants to stay behind where it’s safe.”

Nobody moved.

“Alright then,” I said, feeling my wolf rise to the surface, lending me strength and confidence. “Let’s go save our family.”

Lake opened the portal, the familiar shimmer of displaced reality forming in the center of the living room. Through it, I

could see stone walls and dim lighting-the storage room Riley had indicated.

“Everyone through,” I commanded. “Quickly and quietly. And remember-we’re not here to be heroes. We’re here to shift

the odds. To be the variable that changes 0.1 percent into something survivable.”

Lyn went first, his confidence helping to settle everyone else’s nerves. Then Riley, then Ollie, then Shawn who paused just

before stepping through.

“Thank you,” he said quietly. “For letting me help. For letting me do something instead of just sitting there feeling guilty.”

“We take care of our own,” I said simply. “Now go. We don’t have much time.”

Shawn stepped through. Lake looked at me, waiting for my signal.

“After you,” I said.

“Together,” he corrected, and held out his hand.

I took it, and we stepped through the portal together.

The world shifted, reality folding around us, and then we were there. In the Silvercrest nest. In the middle of active combat. With our family fighting for their lives somewhere nearby.

The portal closed behind us, cutting off our escape route until Lake could open another.

He pointed down a different corridor. “That way. Maybe two hundred feet. But there are enemies between here and there, and Grandma and Grandpa can barely move. They used some kind of explosion technique that exhausted them.”

“Of course they did,” Lyn muttered. “Stubborn old people.”

“Lyn, take Shawn and go after Samuel and Silvia,” I decided. “Use whatever force necessary. Shawn’s plasma blasts and your gravity manipulation should be able to handle most threats. Lake, you go with them-be ready to portal them all out if things get dangerous.”

“What about you?” Ollie asked.

“Riley, Ollie, and I are going to back up Xenois’s team,” I said. “We’ll provide support, watch their backs, and make sure nobody gets surprised by enemies they’re not expecting.”

“Can you fight?” Lyn asked me directly.

“I’ve killed a nightwalker before,” I reminded him. “I can kill more if I have to. Now go. We don’t have time for extended debate.”

Lyn nodded and took off down the indicated corridor, Shawn and Lake following close behind.

Which left me with Riley and Ollie, both of whom were looking at me with trust I desperately hoped I deserved.

“Alright boys,” I said. “Let’s go save your father.”

We rounded the corner and immediately understood why communications had been jammed, why the mission was going so badly, why the odds were so terrible.

Because Jerome hadn’t just prepared for a rescue operation.

He’d prepared for a war.

And we’d just walked right into the middle of it.
