Chapter 430
Ollie immediately ran to his grandparents, checking them over with the worried efficiency of someone who’d been taught basic medical assessment. “Are you okay? Are you hurt? Do you need water?”
“We’re fine, sweetheart,” my mother assured him, though she was clearly lying. “Just a little tired.”
“You look like you got hit by a truck,” Ollie said bluntly.
“Several trucks,” my father agreed. “Maybe a bus. Definitely some motorcycles.”
Another plasma blast from Shawn took out a nightwalker who’d been trying to flank us. The precision was remarkable-he was barely seventeen and fighting like a trained soldier.
“How many of you came?” I demanded, trying to do a headcount while simultaneously fighting off a fae warrior who seemed very committed to separating my head from my shoulders.
“Everyone who’s useful,” Lyn’s voice called out, and I saw him emerge from yet another corridor with Lynn beside him. “We’re the backup plan you didn’t know you needed.”
“I specifically told you to stay home!” Zade yelled from where he was, fighting a fae that was intent on decapitating his head from his neck. Okay fair…..we needed help.
“And I specifically decided that watching you die wasn’t on my agenda for tonight!” Lyn shot back. Then he raised his hands and suddenly the three enemies nearest to my parents were floating six feet off the ground, completely helpless as
gravity stopped being their friend.
“How long can you hold them?” I asked.
“Long enough,” Lyn said, though I could see the strain on his face. “But we should probably wrap this up soon. I’m still
recovering from earlier and this is taking a lot out of me.”
Jerome had finally had enough. He stepped forward, magic crackling around his hands, his face twisted with rage.
“This is not how this was supposed to go!” he screamed. “You were supposed to come alone! You were supposed to be
desperate and make mistakes! You were supposed to be easy to kill!”
“Sorry to disappoint,” I said dryly, trying not to laugh at the frustration coming from Jerome, although I saw Thorne,
muffling his laughter from the corner of my eyes. I was feeling bad for Jerome, today was just not his day.
“But we don’t actually make it a habit to do what our enemies want.”

Chapter 430
“Your parents destroyed my family!” Jerome continued, his voice breaking with emotion. “They burned my sister’s nest. Killed people I loved. And you’re going to protect them? You’re going to defend monsters?”
“They were monsters, I agreed, and I saw my parents flinch at my words. “They did terrible things. Made horrible choices. Caused damage that can’t ever be fully repaired.”
Jerome looked triumphant, like he’d finally gotten through to me.
“But they’re also my parents,” I continued. “And they’re trying to be better. And I’m not going to let their past mistakes justify murdering them in revenge. That’s not justice, Jerome. That’s just more violence perpetuating more violence.”
“Then you’re a fool,” Jerome spat.
“Maybe, I agreed. “But I’m a fool with better backup than you expected.”
Riley chose that moment to demonstrate exactly what I meant. His eyes went distant for a split second-accessing his precognition-then he shouted, “Lyn, drop the one on the left in three, two, one, now!”
Lyn released his gravity hold on the leftmost floating enemy at exactly the moment a stone fell from the damaged ceiling. The nightwalker dropped directly into its path and was knocked unconscious before hitting the ground.
“Okay, that was actually impressive,” my mother said. “Are all of you this coordinated?”
“We’ve been practicing,” Ollie said proudly.
“Without permission,” I added pointedly.
“Details,” Riley said dismissively.
Lake opened a portal beneath another enemy, and they fell through with a scream.
The portal closed immediately, and I didn’t want to think about where they’d been dropped. Debabting between outer space or a volcano, Lake was scary. Thankl God, I adopted him before he could term me his enemy.
Shawn took out two more with precision plasma blasts. Lumina shifted partially and took down a fae warrior with her claws. Lynn was treating Zade’s injuries while simultaneously providing tactical advice about enemy positions.
We were winning. Against all odds, with our unexpected backup and our completely inappropriate collection of powerful children, we were actually winning.
