Chapter 434

XENOIS

“I’m whatever I need to be in any given situation,” she countered. “Right now I’m a gravely injured woman who needs painkillers and possibly ice cream. Can someone arrange that?”

it.”

“I’ll get the painkillers,” Lynn said, already moving. “But I’m vetoing ice cream until we’re sure your stomach can handle

“Boring,” my mother complained. “You’re all boring. No sense of adventure.”

She was insulting people and making demands. Which meant she was going to be fine.

I felt something in my chest unclench, tension I hadn’t realized I was holding finally releasing.

“Mom,” I said, moving closer. “You scared us. When you collapsed, when you were coughing up blood-”

“I know,” she interrupted, her voice gentler now. “I scared myself too. That explosion technique was probably not our wisest choice. But it worked, so I’m calling it a tactical success despite the medical complications.”

“You’re impossible,” I said.

“I prefer ‘determined,” she corrected. “Impossible is so negative.”

Ollie was still in my father’s lap, but he was leaning toward his grandmother now, his small hand reaching out to touch

her arm as if confirming she was really there.

“You promised we’d make cookies,” he said.

“And we will,” my mother assured him. “As soon as I can stand without passing out. Which, according to Lynn’s expression,

Blackwood. I don’t do anything the easy way, including dying.”

“Well, your precognition underestimated me,” my mother said. “Add that to your calculations for future assessments.”

“I will,” Riley promised solemnly.

Lake was crying silently, tears streaming down his face. My mother noticed and held out her hand to him.

“Come here, little one,” she said gently,

Lake moved closer, taking her hand carefully. “I was scared,” he admitted. “I thought you were going to die and it would be my fault because I brought everyone there and maybe we made things worse and-”

“Stop,” my mother interrupted firmly. “You saved us. You and your brothers and Shawn and everyone else who came when they weren’t supposed to. If you hadn’t shown up, your grandfather and I would be dead. Xenois and Zade’s team would probably be dead too. You shifted impossible odds into survivable ones. That’s heroic, Lake. Not something to feel guilty

about.”

“But you got hurt,” Lake said.

“I got hurt because your grandfather and I made stupid choices while escaping captivity,” my mother corrected.

“That’s on us, not you. The fact that I’m alive to complain about it is because of you. So thank you.”

Lake nodded, still crying but looking less devastated.

Shawn hovered at the edge of the group, clearly uncertain whether he belonged in this family moment. My mother noticed
