Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 449

Chapter 449

SHAWN

Lunch was possibly the most chaotic meal I’d ever experienced, and I eaten with traveling merchants who juggled knives for

entertainment.

The dining table was packed. Xenois sat at the head with Lumina beside him, looking exhausted but content. Zade and Lyn were there, engaged in what appeared to be an ongoing debate about magical theory, Lynn was arguing with Rivers about something medical. Carol was

trying to coordinate food distribution while Marcus and Thorne discussed security rotations.

And the kids-god, the kids were everywhere. Ollie was explaining to anyone who would listen about the “super cool forest fire” he’d

witnessed. Riley was taking notes on his tablet about plasma blast trajectories. Lake kept opening tiny portals to steal food from other people’s

plates when they weren’t looking.

It was loud and messy and completely overwhelming.

I sat between Samuel and one of the empty chairs, trying to make myself as small as possible while simultaneously filling my plate with

more food than I’d seen in months.

“Eat,” Silvia commanded from across the table, somehow noticing despite being engaged in conversation with Lumina about coalition

security protocols. “You’re too skinny. We’re fixing that.”

“I’m fine- I started.

“You’re malnourished,” Lynn interrupted, her healer’s eye apparently cataloging my deficiencies. “When’s the last time you had a proper

meal? And I mean actual nutrition, not whatever you were scavenging while living on the run.”

“I ate regularly, I defended weakly.

“Protein bars and whatever you could shoplift from gas stations doesn count,” she said bluntly. “You need consistent calories, proper nutrients, and probably vitamin supplements. I’m making you an appointment for a full physical.”

“I don’t need-

“Not negotiable, Silvia said. “You’re our responsibility now. That means we make sure you’re healthy.”

I wanted to argue. Wanted to insist I could take care of myself, that I been doing fine on my own, that I didn’t need people monitoring

my nutrition and health.

But the truth was I’d been barely surviving. Stealing food when I could going days without eating when I couldn’t. Sleeping in abandoned buildings or under bridges. Never staying anywhere long enough to be noticed or questioned.

Having people care about whether I ate enough was foreign and uncomfortable and also kind of nice.

“Thank you,” I said quietly.

Silvia’s expression softened slightly. “You’re welcome. Now eat your vegetables. And your protein. And probably some carbohydrates. Actually, just eat everything on your plate and then get seconds.”

I focused on my food, letting the conversations flow around me. It was easier to observe than participate. Safer to stay quiet and learn the dynamics of this family before trying to insert myself into them.

Shawn.

I looked up to find Xenois watching me from the head of the table. His expression was neutral, impossible to read.

This was it. The conversation I’d been dreading. Where he told me he wasn’t okay with his parents adopting me, that I didn’t belong here, that I should leave before things got more complicated.

“Yes?’ I managed.

“My parents tell me you’re quite powerful,” he said. “Plasma manipulation is a rare ability. Especially with the kind of range and intensity

you demonstrated today.”

I’m still learning to control it,” I said quickly. “I know I set the forest on fire and that was irresponsible and I’ll help replant trees or

whatever needs to be done to fix-

“I’m not criticizing you,” Xenois interrupted gently. “I’m saying you have a valuable ability that could be incredibly useful. And that with

proper training, you could be one of the most formidable defenders this region has.”

I blinked, completely thrown. “You think I’m useful?”

“I think you’re powerful,” he corrected. “And power, when properly directed and controlled, becomes a tremendous asset. We’re in the

middle of a regional conflict with Jerome’s coalition. Having someone who can eliminate threats from a distance without close combat risk?

That’s strategically significant.”

“He’s saying you’re a weapon,” Riley translated helpfully. “A very effective long-range weapon with the added benefit of complete target

elimination and psychological impact on enemies who witness it.”

“Riley,” Lumina said reproachfully. “We don’t refer to people as weapons.”

“But he is tactically analogous to a weapon system, Riley protested. That’s not dehumanizing, that’s accurate assessment of combat

capabilities.”

“You’re five,” Xenois said. “You shouldn’t be making tactical assessments of combat capabilities.”

“And yet I’m very good at it,” Riley countered.

“He’s not wrong,” Zade muttered.

I was still processing Xenois’s words. He thought I was valuable. Not burden, not a replacement for his dead sister, but actually valuable

in my own right.

“I want to help,” I said, finding my voice. “With the coalition, with security, with whatever you need. I know I’m just a kid and I don’t have experience and I’ll probably mess things up, but I want to contribute. To earn my place here.”

“You don’t have to earn anything,” Xenois said firmly. “If my parents are adopting you, that makes you family. Family doesn’t have to earn

their place. They just have it.”

“But-

“No buts, he said. “Though I appreciate the offer to help. And once you ve had proper training, once Lynn has cleared you medically, and

once you’ve had time to adjust to everything that’s happened-then yes,ll find ways for you to contribute. But that’s because you want to,

not because you have to prove yourself worthy.”

I felt something tight in my chest loosen

slightly. “You’re really okay with this? With your parents adopting me?”

Xenois was quiet for a moment, his expression shifting to something more vulnerable. “My sister died five years ago. And for a long time, I

was angry at everyone and everything because she was gone and nothing could bring her back. I’m not going to lie and say I don’t still miss

her. That there aren’t moments when I wish she was here instead of-*

He stopped, seeming to recalibrate. “But you’re not replacing her. You’re not Xena 2.0 or some substitute daughter for my parents. You’re

Shawn. A seventeen-year-old werewitch who’s been through hell and deserves a family that will support him. And if my parents want to provide

that family, then I’m not going to object just because I have complicated feelings about my sister.”
