Chapter 461

LUMINA

“That would be nice,” I said wistfully.

“After we deal with Jerome’s coalition and the supernatural uprising and whatever other disasters are brewing, Xenois added.

Obviously, I agreed.

The boys had scattered again, drawn away by whatever new chaos was happening elsewhere in the house. Xenois and I stood together, watching our family move through the organized chaos that had become our normal.

Through the permanent portal, I could see into Zade’s territory. Lynn was arguing with someone about medical protocols. Marcus and Jason were laughing about something, hands linked in a way that suggested they’d stopped being subtle about their relationship. Lyn was reading on a couch, his hand absently resting on his stomach in a gesture that was either protective or unconscious.

“This is insane,” I said. “Our lives. This house. The constant stream of people and crises and supernatural complications. When did everything get so complicated?”

“Probably around the time we decided to challenge centuries of tradition and build something better,” Xenois said. “Progress is

messy.”

“That’s one word for it,” I muttered.

Movement caught my eye. Silvia, moving through the backyard with suspicious quickness, carrying what looked very much like a package from a delivery service. A package she was trying to hide under her jacket.

A package that, from the distinctive shape and smell even at this distance, was definitely marijuana.

I watched as my mother-in-law glanced around to make sure no one was watching-completely missing that I was literally standing at the kitchen window-and then ducked into the pool house with her contraband.

ying to maintain any sense of normal standards or appropriate behavior in this family,” I said. “Your mother just smuggled weed o our pool house. In broad daylight. While recovering from nearly dying. I officially give up on trying to control anything.”

Xenois followed my gaze and sighed deeply. “Should I address that?”

“Probably,” I said. “But honestly? After everything else, is your elderly mother doing recreational drugs really the hill we want to d

on?”

“That’s a surprisingly pragmatic perspective, Xenois observed.

“I’ve learned to pick my battles,” I said. “And ‘stop your mother from getting high in the pool house’ is not a battle I have the energy for today.”

“Fair enough,” he agreed. “Though we’re adding it to the list of things to address eventually.”

“The list is very long, I pointed out.

“The list is endless, he corrected. ‘But we’re making progress. Slowly. In our own chaotic way.”

I leaned into him, letting his solid presence ground me. This man-my mate, my partner, the father of my children-had been distant and cold in my previous life. Had been manipulated into neglecting me, into prioritizing another woman, into letting our family fall apart.

But in this timeline, he was here. Present. Loving. Fighting beside me instead of against me.

That was worth everything.

Whatever price I eventually had to pay for this second chance, whatever debt was hanging over my head, whatever purpose I was supposed to fulfill-it was worth it to have this. To have my family intact, my children alive, my mate beside me.

“I love you,’ I said suddenly, urgently, like I needed him to know right now in case I never got another chance to say it.

Xenois turned to face me fully, his expression shifting to concern. “I love you too. Lumina, what’s wrong? You’ve been off all morning. Distracted and worried about something.”

“Just thinking about how lucky I am,” I said, which was true even if it wasn’t the whole truth. “About how things could have gone so differently. About how grateful I am that we get this-this chaos, this family, this life.”

“Even with nightwalker conspiracies and supernatural uprisings and my mother doing drugs in the pool house?” he asked.

cially with all that,’ I confirmed. “Because it means we’re here. Together. Fighting for something that matters.”

st all odds, despite all complications, we somehow got this. And I’m not going to take it for granted.”

Good,” I said. “Because I plan on keeping it. All of it. For as long as possible.”

“Deal,” he said, then kissed me with the kind of intensity that suggested he was equally aware of how precious this was.

From somewhere in the house, I heard crashes and shouting. Samuel’s voice raised in mock outrage about something. Silvia cackli

with laughter. The kids shrieking with delight about some new game or disaster.

This was my life. Chaotic and complicated and absolutely insane.

And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Even if there was a price still to pay. Even if the debt eventually came due. Even if whoever or whatever had brought me back demanded something in return.

This-this family, this love, this second chance-was worth whatever cost.

I just hoped I was strong enough to pay it when the time came.
