Chapter 467

SHAWN

“We’re interested in you,” she corrected. “There’s a difference.”

The hallways were starting to clear as students moved toward their first classes. I looked at my destroyed locker, then at these four teenagers who’d apparently been hiding their supernatural nature while operating in plain sight.

“So what now?” I asked.

“Now you come to lunch with us,” Izzy said. “We sit in the science building courtyard-it’s quieter than the main cafeteria and we can actually talk without being overheard. You can meet the rest of our group.”

“There are more of you?”

“Eight total,” Alex said. “Various supernatural beings living quietly in the territory. We call ourselves the Underground-very dramatic,

we know, but we were fourteen when we picked the name and it seemed cool at the time.”

‘I don’t want to intrude-” I started.

“You’re not intruding,” Chase interrupted. “You’re a werewitch who’s just been publicly adopted by the most prominent family in the territory. You’re also clearly powerful and clearly struggling with control. We can help with that. And honestly, it would be nice to have someone who understands what it’s like to be supernatural but not traditionally pack.”

I looked at them-these four nerdy teenagers who’d apparently been hiding supernatural identities while attending school with full

werewolves. Who’d saved me from plasma detonation without hesitation. Who were offering friendship when I desperately needed allies.

“Okay,” I agreed. “Lunch in the science courtyard. But I’m buying-you saved my life with the liquid nitrogen thing.”

“Technically we saved multiple lives,” Kamsi pointed out. “Yo

fifteen feet.”

plasma blast would have killed or seriously injured anyone within

“Then I really owe you,” I said.

“You can repay us by letting us study your abilities,” she said eagerly. “Not in a creepy way! Just observations, measurements, maybe

some controlled tests to understand the mechanics-”

“Kamsi,” Chase interrupted. “You’re doing the thing where you get over-enthusiastic about science and forget social boundaries.”

“Right. Sorry. Too much?” she asked me.

“A little,” I admitted. “But I appreciate the enthusiasm.”

The warning bell rang, signaling five minutes to first period.

“What class do you have first?” Izzy asked, pulling out their schedule.

I checked mine. “Advanced Chemistry with Professor Morrison.”

“Oh good, you’re with Chase,” Izzy said. “He can show you where that is. We’ll meet you at lunch-science courtyard, noon.”

They scattered to their respective classes, leaving me with Chase, who gestured for me to follow him.

“Thanks again,” I said as we walked. “For the save. I really was about to lose control.”

“We’ve all been there,” Chase said. “That moment when your abilities activate because of emotion instead of intention. It gets easier

with practice.”

“How long have you been hiding?” I asked.

“Since I was twelve,” he said. “That’s when my wolf manifested. My dad is werewolf-low-ranked pack member-and my mom is

human. When I started shifting, we had to decide whether to register me with the pack or hide what I was. We chose hiding because the prejudice against halfbloods was pretty severe back then.”

“Is it better now?” I asked.

“A little,” Chase admitted. “Alpha Xenois’s reforms have helped. But there’s still this attitude that pure bloodlines are superior, that halfbloods are diluting pack strength. My family decided it was safer to continue hiding than to test whether the acceptance was genuine.”

“That’s depressing,” I said.

“That’s reality,” Chase corrected. “But it’s changing. Slowly. People like you-powerful supernatural beings being publicly accepted into prominent families-it makes it easier for people like us to consider coming out of hiding.”

We reached the chemistry classroom. Through the windows, I could see it was already filling with students.

“One more thing,” Chase said quietly. “Those alphas who were hassling you earlier? They’re going to be a problem. They’re from traditionalist families who oppose Alpha Xenois’s reforms. They’ll probably target you specifically because you represent everything they hate about the changes.”

“Great,” I muttered.

“But you have allies now,” Chase said. “The Underground looks out for each other. Someone gives you trouble, you tell us. We might

not be as powerful as you, but we’re good at subtle sabotage and strategic inconvenience.”

Despite everything-the destroyed locker, the near-plasma detonation, the bullying-I felt myself smile.

“Thanks, I said. “I think I really needed to hear that.”
